Today, I de-lurk for a kitten.

Nice job saving the Kitty. Above advice looks great so I would just like to add:
Welcome out of lurkdom. I hope you enjoy the stay.

Awwwwww…

What a sweetums!

But do take that trip to the vet really, really soon. You want to get a test done for FIV and Feline Leukemia. If either of those are positive you have a really hard decision since both diseases are eventually fatal AND they are contagious. However, with FIV, kittens of diseased mothers are sometimes positive at first and then negative 6 months later.

Hope everything turns out AOK.

Almost-no-content update:

I’m actually flying for another interview today, so my fiancee’s in charge of the kitten for now. I’m told things are going reasonably well, and actually the initial vet visit should be in progress right about now. I will of course keep you informed.

I look forward to getting back home soon, even if it does mean sharing kitten-bum-rubbing duties…

The vet will weigh the kitty and give you an age that is from a horribly compex formula. Average cats gain one pound a month for one year to average 12 pounds full grown. Now, I used that formula with my rescue kitty and was wrong…she weight 3.5 months at 6 months. She maxed out at 8#. I knew when she lost her baby teeth and said “better get a spay stat!” You will know when she loses her baby teeth because she will bite your hand, react strangely and leave…but her tooth will still be in your hand! I concur that the kitty is young…I’m thinking 2 months. She does look old enough to potty by herself, but if she hadn’t eaten in a few days, she may not have much in her tummy. Whether or not momma cat was still there, you did the right thing. A little kitten plus a busy road is a recipe for a short kitty life.

This kitten is labeled as 2 months…judging by eyes and fur, he’s about the same age as yours.

They look at the teeth, too, or at least that’s how my vet found out my Katya was older than the shelter said she was. She looked in Katya’s mouth, and immediately said “her birthdate isn’t what they told you”.

Not necessarily. Sometimes they swallow their lost teeth. The vet told me Katya still had at least some baby teeth when I took her in for her first appointment. I kept on the lookout for lost teeth, so that the Kitty Tooth Fairy could give her some toys, but I never found any. (She got and continues to get lots of toys anyway)

ISTR reading somewhere that, if they want to, cats can “hold it in” for a surprising amount of time, and they sometimes do that when they get to a new home.

Even if the kitten did survive the road and get away to a safer location, the life of a feral cat is usually much shorter and much less pleasant than the life of a pet cat. You definitely did the right thing.

welcome aboard!!!

what a cutie.

i hope things went well with the interview and the vet. i hope y’all have a great time with your newest family member.

most important is to keep the kitten warm and hydrated. it sounds like you have that covered.

It may be that he’s drinking instead of eating because he’s dehydrated, if he’s been on his own for any length of time.COngratulations on saving a life. That’s always a good thing. And welcome to the boards. Now m\post!

Good luck with the interview process.

Agreed on the vet imperative. Ferals go for about 2-3 years on average, frequently ending their days violently or traumatically, or due to parasitic/infection issues.

Ska-WEEE!

She looks really sweet. How about “Zotti”?

Always good to keep a kitty from getting sqooshed.

Things are going well!

The vet visit went well, nothing terribly wrong but the vet says she’s probably been without food for about a week. (A week?! :() We’re to continue with formula until some time next week, then gradually try shifting toward something more solid. We’ll have more vet appointments soon for followup, immunizations, and fixing.

It turns out that the bathroom habits thing is a non-issue… she just doesn’t like the litter we picked the first time around. Switch the litter, and she does it all on her own, no stimulation required.

She’s also figured out that there are things in this world that don’t need hissed at, and that it’s OK to stay awake even when it’s not time to eat. I was really pleased to see that she’s even willing to do a little bit of clumsy romping (still a bit wobbly, especially on the hind legs), and seems to have decided that little foam balls are fun.

For the record, I’ve added 3 more pics of the now-energetic kitten. They’re at the same place as before: http://s59.photobucket.com/albums/g286/sdmbporridj/cats/

All in all, I think we’re in good shape. Once again, thank you all for the advice, encouragement, and stories!

All the paintings of big-eyed kids in the world don’t even come close to the concentrated cuteness of this picture…

You have a very nice way with words.
So did you name the kitty yet?

Porridge might be a fun name for kitty too. Or Farina.

Ooooh! SKWEE!

Stalk the foam ball! The wiley foam ball! Hee!

Sweet kitty! I propose you name her “Cecilia.” You’re breakin’ my heart!

Or Smokey. Is it a boy or a girl?

I think she looks like Nermal , the world’s cutest kitten.

Congrats, porridj, on your good deed, and on being willing to add another Lare to the household. When I reached the first name suggestion, I thought Cecile, but then I thought when Honey suggested of Havoc was a good one; it fits well with the other two.

You’ve gotten lots of good advice. All I can add is to enjoy her, and the feeling of satisfaction at having done a gen-u-wine Good Deed. A kitten that hadn’t eaten for a week (as the vet told you) had certainly been separated from Mama Cat, and it was you, or kitten pancake, as you so succinctly expressed it.

Now that you’ve started posting, you may find it as addictive as the rest of us do. And besides, you’ll hafta tell us what name you pick, and give us updates on your baby!
