Today, I de-lurk for a kitten.

I like Cecilia, too. Such a serious little face! That is one of the most beautiful cats I’ve ever seen - she needs a name that reflects all her glory.

I don’t know if your old girls will be able to ignore the kitten for long. I suspect they’ll be taking turns giving her baths soon, once she’s worked her kitten magic on them.

And welcome to the Dope!

oh my goodness! that is one seriously cute kitten. the poor dear, 1 week! i’m glad y’all stopped for her.

cecilia is a good name with lots of silly nickname possiblities for those silly kitty times.

So, another update seems in order. I’m at a particularly hectic time in school right now, so I apologize for the delay.

Anyhoo… the kitten (still as yet unnamed, but I like the suggestions!) is doing really well, and has now moved up to wet food and watery formula. She still won’t drink water straight, but I suppose I don’t blame her.

Unfortunately, and I’m not 100% sure about this, it looks like we may not be able to keep her. Our older cats are not coping well. They’ve hissed at the poor thing since day one, but things have slowly gone downhill from there.

Mayhem is afraid of the kitten, who does the aggressive sideways-run that cats do… and apparently a little grey fluffball walking like a crab is scary in Mayhem’s book. Like, “run away and cower” scary. :dubious:

Mischief, on the other hand, wholeheartedly disapproves of losing any more of her turf than what she’s already granted Mayhem. Hissing led to prowling, prowling led to stalking, and stalking led to giving the kitten a couple (non-clawed) bonks to the head and rump today. Not good. We’re monitoring contact between the ranks even more carefully now.

Once again, I’m not really sure what to do. There’s a part of me that would be very sad to give up the little thing, but there’s also a part of me that says she’d be happier elsewhere, where she’s not having to argue with big bullies at every turn. Not to mention this is a very hectic time for this household, and may not be the best time to have a high-maintenance animal around. I know, that sounds cold, but the way things are going right now I’m just not sure if we can give the kitten the attention she deserves.

But… but… fwuffy kidden!!!

I’m restraining myself with all my might from asking for that fwuffy liddle kidden, but there might be Dopers near you who need one. Dopers who don’t have my iron will!

Actually, I just hope you can keep her. Your older cats may still come around, given more time.

It’s been less than a week, right? I’d definitely give things more time. We’ve introduced a new kitten to older cats a couple of times, and my sister has done so about a half dozen times or more. It just takes a while. Just don’t let them actually hurt one another, and be sure the older ones are not blocking access to essentials like litter and food.

Hellooooo - you are going to keep us informed, right, porridj? You can’t show us pictures of the cutest kitty alive and not keep us informed!

Heh  sorry… I thought I could get away with slinking into the shadows for a bit while school and interviews and stuff calms down. I should have known better

Anyway, things are sort of in stasis right now. The kitten is still without name (we had this problem with Mischief & Mayhem as well), but right now Havoc is in the lead as a possibility. This is because the kitten’s primary form of entertainment is to run full tilt then pounce on your foot, leg, or any other available body part. One point for every tooth or claw that meets flesh, five points if the human says something more colorful than “ow”.

Mayhem and the kitten seem to almost be OK with each other now… Mischief is still not so sure, but there are signs of improvement. My meter’s still in the “don’t know how this will turn out” range, but it’s at least tilting positive now.

When she’s not busy piercing our feet, she’s a little sweetums, though. Sometimes both simultaneously. For instance, if you find yourself transformed into a kitten some day, be advised that the bestest sleeping position is to sink your claws into a socked foot, then lay your cheek on said foot and close your eyes. This works even if the foot is not on the ground… it just requires that you sleep partially upright. :dubious:

There, that should do for the moment. Hey, some day I might even post in a different thread!

Seriously, please do. I look forward to many more threads from you on the SDMB. hugs

You do have to admit, it’d be kind of perversely fascinating if she hooked us, reeled us in with what is obviously an exceedingly cute kitten and a great heartwarming tale of saving a young life, then fed into the tale with bits of info on the house cats acceptance of the new arrival…

…then never posted again in another thread !!!. Wacky, right?

 I jest. You are a welcome addition to the fold. Now I want a kitten, and we already have four cats. Hmph !!

This behavior should be nipped in the bud. Whenever she attempts a peircing, be it teeth or claws, hold the offending part and in a deep, forceful voice say NO! or no biting or no claws. Once she’s not attached by tooth or nail, pet and praise her. It works. Never play fight with your hand (or foot) with her. When she wants to fight, get an old towel or sock. Don’t bring your open hand over her head to pet her. That’s an agressive move, come in from the side.

Aw. Well, if it doesn’t work out, do you live near Detroit? I’m in the market for a kitty, mahself and I’d gladly take a pre-owned one.

Just don’t tell my female birth giver. We need enough time to get a second kitten after that for bunches of fun.

What the fuck? 2000 posts? When did that happen???
has just noticed it

I hope it works out for you. You’ve done a great thing! I know - we rescued one ourselves nineteen years ago, and she’s still one of the best parts of our life! She’s a little slower now, but still a gift. Good luck with your kitty, your fiance and your job search!
