Tom Morello's solo acoustic sound. What do you think?

I just found out that he has a solo album coming out next month and I gotta say I’m kinda stoked after hearing it on the website. I think most of the songs can be heard on this site.

What do you think about it? Sounds like a cross between Petty/Dylan/Cash to me.

Anyone?

As a fan of rage and audioslave, this is really bad. The singing is terrible and the playing is nothing special.

It seems okay. Not really bad or really good. I’d need to hear more to decide if I liked it or wanted to get the cd.

The singing is quite poor. Petty, Dylan and Cash? More like Shitty, Ill-yn and Trash. The acoustic accompaniment is at the middle school talent show level.

Morello should stick to what he does best, and leave this type of music to someone who can actually sound playing it.

Just listened to more of it. Man-oh-man those lyrics are badly written! At the level of Dan Hill’s It’s A Long Road (the closing song to Rambo: First Blood.)

I’m sorry to keep busting on it - I know the OP liked it. I too am a fan of Rage, and think Morello is a badass guitarist - he should heed the expression “do one thing, and do it well.” This style is not his, and he takes to it like a fish in a bowl of sand.

Hmm, ‘The Road I Must Travel’ is kind of fun and sea-shanty like.

But I think of Tom Morello as being more talented than this.

It’s funny, but for all the praise he gets, I’ve ALWAYS thought he was the weak link in both RATM and especially Audioslave.

I find his playing predictable. He always sounded to me like a guy with no soul whatsoever. Not exactly Yngwie but his melodies always go right where you think they’re going. He confounds effects for creativity.

He always stuck me as a guy who was very Californian. I was surprised to learn he’s from Harlem.

Nothing draws me to a solo album from him.

I really wanted to like it, but I just couldn’t. Poor lyrics, bad singing and average guitar playing all hopefully equal a Rage Against the Machine reunion.

A Rage reunion is already in the works, although I think it’s a one-off for now.
