Thanks to Steam’s sale, I’m now trying my hand at my first Tomb Raider game (Legend, number 7). Am I doing something wrong or is the movement/view typical for a 3rd-person shooter game (or just TR)?
Most of my shoot-em-up experience is with first person shooters—where you have a high degree of control over what you see and where you’re going. If you’re shooting, you typically have a significant amount of precision over where you’re aiming. Perhaps that’s clouding my expectations.
But Tomb Raider? It’s like I’m stuck in a movie theater from hell. Hey, is that a shiny object? I sure wish I could see it, but instead I’ve got this lovely close-up of Ms. Croft. Hey, maybe I want to jump over there. I’m not sure though, because I’ve got this lovely close-up of Ms. Croft. I need to figure out where to swim to, but I can’t because I’ve got this lovely close-up of Ms. Croft’s ass. At least she’s not wearing a fruit hat.
The game keeps on zooming in on her face and other body parts. I’ve kind of gotten used to the move-relative-to-the-camera mechanic, but time and again my view is blocked by a giant head or set of digital hooters. There she is, messing up an otherwise panoramic vista. There she is, standing (and dying) between me and the bad guys.
Is it as confusing going from 3rd person shooters to 1st person shooters? Am I missing something obvious, like a don’t-let-Ms. Croft-take-up-more-than-half-the-screen option? I get that if I waggle the mouse just a bit I can pan around her big head, but that often just gives me a view of her butt. Is there a way to get the camera to zoom out? Is this my dysfunction because I’m new to it—is there some trick to never checking out her pores? Or is this part of the appeal of the game?
