I just checked on the Ebonics thread and found it closed. Rats! Though I joined the discussion late, I just wanted to say thanks to all (mentioned in OP title or not) who discussed my continued questions. Hat is off to Max for thinking of the OP, too.
I think I really learned something about a field in which I previously had only a passing interest. Cool, no?
NoClueBoy, thanks for pointing me to that thread, and Max, thanks for starting it. I don’t spend mucn time over in GQ so I missed it. I’d also like to see this discussion continued over in GD, if anyone’s interested.
It has been done before, but I wouldn’t mind doing it again. Where did the "black"accent come from? There were others. I vividly remember two that I participated in, but can’t find. One may have been lost during the Winter of Missed Content.
I loooove language threads.
I’m trying to save that thread, as an example of SD threads where I got educated in a thoroughly enjoyable way. Exposure to Hedra’s master’s thesis gave me a way to understand the issue without the baggage of judgment attached to it. Thanks, all.
I, too, found the thread quite informative, and am deeply appreciative of everyone who contributed to the discussion. I was disturbed by the conduct of the moderator, however. The decision to close the thread was, by itself, arguably defensible: Although the timing of that decision operated to deny an opportunity for response to some who had been insulted and unfairly credited with views they never expressed, the principal question was, if not exactly “answered,” at least exhaustively explored. It was, however, decidedly unfortunate that the moderator saw fit to use the terminal entry – i.e., the “last word” – to get in his own digs. Is it too much to expect a moderator to display a little more moderation?
