Too much exercise is bad for your teeth

Well not really, but whenever I engage in any type of strenuous workout (which is seldom), my bottom row of teeth pain me terribly. Recently I made a mad dash to the other side of campus (grrr, lousy campus. 8200 acres worth of trees interrupted by the occasional edifice) and by the time I’d reached my destination, my teeth hurt more than my limbs. I was out of breath, my heart was pounding and my teeth were killing me! I’m fairly certain I’m not a total weirdo as others have told me they experience a similar phenomenon. Why is this?

I’ve heard people with hangovers say their teeth hurt, but this is a new one on me. Are the teeth in question…yours? If not maybe you have a bad fit.

Could you be clenching your teeth?

I do that when I sleep sometimes and they ache when I wake up.

Never heard of this? :smack: Maybe I am crazy. And no, I don’t clench my teeth. Only my lower incisors hurt. Rather odd, I suppose.

I heard teeth can turn pink from blood if someone is strangulated. (I, um… saw it on TLC or something… really!) This tells me teeth have some blood supply.

When this happened to me somewhat a while back (the pain, not the strangulation), I imagined it was due to the increased blood pressure in the tooth root, where it was unable to expand, thus causing mild (to me) pain. After all, I could feel my neck & temples throbbing, why not that?

are your teeth sensitive to any other stimulus ? - cold or hot drinks?

general info on sensitive teeth http://www.dental--health.com/faq_sensitiveteeth.html

If you have cracks in the enamel or a leaky filling these can often get pain, especially if drinking cold sugary drinks.

Also are you sure it is not referred pain? Pain can be very hard to pin down accurately sometimes - sinus or jaw problems?

I get the same thing when I do exercise and am unfit. The fitter I get, the less I seem to suffer.

My bottom gums hurt only after running. After other excercise they are okay, but when I’m through running they throb for about a half hour then they are okay again. Is this something I should be concerned about? …Visitor from New York

Answer:
See your dentist. You probably haven’t had a good hygienist cleaning in 6 months.

Found this at the site scm1001 mentioned.

Do you ever have sinus problems? They can often be mistaken for tooth pain, and might easily be made worse by exercise. I once had tooth pain so bad I assumed I needed root canal, but the dentist found out it was a sinus infection.

She told me if you can put your finger on a specific spot the pain is coming from, it’s probably a tooth or gum problem, but if you can’t pinpoint the actual spot it’s probably sinuses.

When I do sit-ups, my top row of teeth tense up which results in a strange pain like senstation. Nothing big enough to stop me doing them, but it’s there. I’ve always put it down the the braces I have, but seeing as I’ve had them all the time I’ve been doing them on a regular basis, I can’t guarantee that. It may also have something to do with putting my hands behind my head. On the other hand, it could be a problem related to your own.

This happens to me too, and I think its because I’m breathing deeper, and so more cold air passes over and through my teeth. If i clench my teeth and breathe in through them, it really hurts. Try it, maybe its the sensitivity to the cold air that’s the problem?

I don’t have any sinus problems and my teeth don’t respond to other stimuli. But like Cillasi, running causes my teeth to hurt pretty badly. Also, bike riding seems to have this same effect. I suppose I just may have to go to the dentist and in the mean time I’ll actually have a good excuse to avoid working out.
