4th: Past polls and Results:
After the ZZ Top poll, sometime this decade, the plan is to compile all the votes from the SDMB & post them in a few threads. Then I’ll burn a several volume CD set & mail ‘em out to the voters who helped keep these threads going. The scrap-heap of past polls continues to grow: Dave Clark Five § Bonzo Dog Band§ Cake§ Beck (Hanson) § Jimmy Buffett § Jeff Buckley § The Byrds § Buffalo Springfield § Bush § Kate Bush § Jackson Browne § James Brown § Better Than Ezra § Banarama § David Bowie Boston § Bon Jovi § Blur § Belle & Sebastian§ Blue Öyster Cult § Blondie§ Blink 182§ Black Sabbath§ Black Crowes§ Bjork§ B-52’s§ Chuck Berry§ Beastie Boys§ Jeff Beck§ The Band§ Beach Boys§ Beatles§ Animals§ Tori Amos§ Allman Brothers§ AC/DC § Abba& Aerosmith polls.

Tabulation Notes: What a breeze. Compilation went by in the blink of an eye. The accounting department at the 6@6 corporate offices were very careful to not screw up the results…like they did with the Beatles “Day in The Life / A Day in the Life”…if you find any errors please report them. Side note: the posthumous has been removed from the supplemental template.

10th & Lastly: Week #24’s Featured Poll Artist
Without further ado, the Man In Black…Johnny Cash.

Here are my 6 JOHNNY CASH selections:

  1. Personal Jesus It’s just a rip hearing him cover Depeche Mode
  2. I Walk The Line With The Tennessee Two, 1956
  3. Ring Of Fire
  4. A Boy Named Sue Only cuz I still remember all the words
  5. The Devil Comes Back To Georgia With Mark O’Connor & Charlie Daniels
  6. San Quentin Talk about playing to your audience…Love that B+W photo of him giving a lensman the finger while performing one of his prison shows

Damn, that was a lot harder than I thought it would be, I had to cut out a lot of great stuff to truncate it to 6.

Thanking you all in advance. Hope to see some of you over at the Cab Calloway Supplemental poll Have a great week!

In no particular order

Get Rhythm
I’ve Been Everywhere
Long Black Veil
Cocaine Blues
Jackson
One Piece at a Time

  1. Folsom Prison Blues
  2. Jackson (With June Carter Cash)
  3. I Walk The Line
  4. Lorena (obscure, from the “Silver” album, but great!)
  5. Hey, Porter
  6. Big River

It was hard to leave “Mean Eyed Cat” and “Katy Too” off, but one is only permitted six…:frowning:

  1. Ring of Fire (now a TV commercial!)
  2. Boy Named Sue
  3. Ghost Riders in the Sky
  4. Daddy Sang Bass
  5. Orangeblossom Special
  6. Folsom Prison Blues

Yippie, I get to play!

In no particular order. Hellish enough cutting the list down to this:

Mercy Seat: Heard this first over the noise of consumers in a Borders without realizing who it was.

Folsom Prison Blues

Jackson

One Piece At A Time

25 Minutes to Go

I’ve Been Everywhere

(If I was in a snarky mood, I’d include “You Are My Sunshine” which he did as a duet with a young Bob Dylan, or “The Wanderer” from U2’s Zooropa, which I rather liked but some people hate.)

Really, how do you cut down about a hundred records of great stuff to come up with six songs?!?

Anyway, here are six that as of this minute rock my world (in no order - it’s hard enough cutting them down, let alone putting them in order):

  • Ballad of a Teenage Queen - love those harmonies, and a great story ta boot!

  • Were You There … - Exhibit #1 next time some turkey pulls out that old line about the Devil having all the good tunes.

  • Orange Blossom Special [live at Folsom Prison] - Try to find the film clip if you can, where he looks every inch the sex symbol, off drugs at last and coming to get you!

  • Let the Train Blow The Whistle - Along with the Stooges ‘Sick of You’ and the Urinals ‘Go Away Girl’, one of the great ‘I’m breaking up and I couldn’t be happier’ songs.

  • Solitary Man - OK, so it’s a Neil Diamond cover, but hell, if it doesn’t blow my head off every time …

  • The Man In Black - his signature tune, and close to the only sixties/early seventies political song that I don’t wish was in Spanish (so I wouldn’t have to understand it).

Next time make it a top 60, so it’s not so hard, OK

  1. Daddy Sang Bass
  2. Ring Of Fire
  3. I Walk the Line
  4. (dont remember name of the song, but it had this line in it " …and the drummer was a methodist" in it)
  5. Folsom Prison Blues
  6. Orange Blossum Special

My mom used to play Johnny Cash while we cleaned the house as a kid. She only had one LP and it was some kind of greatist hits album. Good times.

JohnBckWLD, I didn’t try to vote in the suplemental poll since I never heard of the group- though I wondered the connection to Dada until I figured out Dada was occasionally part of the band’s name much like Grace Slick’s frequently renamed band- but I never added my DC5 picks because the boards have been crashing constantly on me for the past week; I made up my list and everything, but the boards wouldn’t stay up long enough for me to post it. If it’s not just me having problems, that might account for the small number of voters.

I’m glad to see everyone else is also having trouble deciding.

No way can I put these in any order.
**Delia’s Gone
Ring of Fire
Folsom Prison Blues
I Walk the Line
A Boy Named Sue
Tennesse Flat-Top Box **

Do not be fooled by my list; I chose the more radio friendly tunes because they were what I heard the most. However, when I was a child, my mother owned a trucking company, and all of the drivers made sure that the little kid in the office (me) got a heavy education of Cash. (Not to mention the rest of the “outlaws”)

Johnny Reb, Cry Cry Cry, John Henry’s Hammer, Vietnam Blues, Don’t Take Your Guns to Town…Geez, the list could go on & on. What a nostalgia trip.

I Walk The Line
Tennessee Flat Top Box
Ring of Fire
(Ghost) Riders In The Sky
Highwayman (Does this count? I saw it in a few of his greatest hits CDs, but it’s not just him.)
Boy Named Sue

  1. Five Feet High and Rising
  2. Cocaine Blues
  3. Don’t Take Your Guns to Town
  4. Ring of Fire
  5. Sunday Morning Coming Down
  6. Big River

Is this Nick Cave’s Mercy Seat?

I shouldn’t vote, since I’m not really familiar with the guys work, but I want to throw in a vote for The Wanderer (w/- U2). I feel justified in doing that because his voice really does do heaps for this song - I feel it is his just as much as U2’s. And it’s a good song.

  1. Ring of Fire (I have an autographed copy of the original pressing of the album).
  2. I Walk the Line
  3. Folsom Prison Blues
  4. Big River
  5. It Ain’t Me, Babe
  6. Peace in the Valley (I think I may want this one played at my memorial service).

“Hello…I’m Johnny Cash.”

I missed the Bonzo Dog Band??? Aiieeeee!!! :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack: :smack:

For the record:

  1. Ali Baba’s Camel
  2. Monster Mash
  3. The Intro and the Outro
  4. Humanoid Boogie
  5. Tent
  6. Jazz, Delicious Hot, Disgusting Cold

OK. I’ve calmed down. Now for Johnny Cash:

  1. I Walk the Line
  2. Ring of Fire
  3. A Boy Named Sue (love Shel Silverstein)
  4. Orange Blossom Special
  5. Folsom Prison Blues

Another poll that’s difficult to narrow down the choices to 6. With someone who has been performing as long as The Man in Black, you almost need to break it down into categories: The Sun Years, The Mercury Years, The Columbia Years, The Carter Family, The Highwaymen, The Hymns, etc.

[ol]
[li]Sunday Morning Coming Down[/li][li]Ring of Fire[/li][li]As Long As I Live [/li][li]Folsom Prison Blues[/li][li]Cry, Cry, Cry[/li][li]Guess Things Happen That Way[/li][/ol]

Damn! This one’s tough!

  1. Ring of Fire
  2. Five Feet High and Rising
  3. Folsom Prison Blues
  4. I Walk the Line
  5. Big River
  6. Girl From the North Country (duet with Bob Dylan on Nashville Skyline)

Hmm.

I walk the Line
Ring of Fire
Folsom Prison Blues
Delia’s Gone
Boy named Sue
25 Minutes to Go

May I suggest Crosby, Stills & Young (& Nash) as the supplemental poll for week 43?

At this point, I’m sure no one wants to hear that another person had a hard time boiling this down to 6, but damn if I didn’t have a tough time boiling this down to 6.’

  1. Delia’s Gone
  2. Ring of Fire (Love those horns)
  3. Walk the Line
  4. Folsom Prison
  5. Cry Cry Cry
  6. Jackson
  1. Ring of Fire
  2. I Got Stripes
  3. Orleans Parish Prison
  4. Orange Blossom Special
  5. Don’t Take Your Guns to Town
  6. Kneeling Drunkard’s Plea
