Questions, Answers, Issues, Requests & Honorable Mentions
-
Question (From Archive Guy) Regarding the SDMB CD set:
Answer: I’m compiling all the results from each week. It’ll probably be a chronological set of 12-80 minute CDs {16 hours / 2 days @ work of music. It will be the made up of the songs with the most votes (the cutoff I’m unsure of at this point) or maybe the top 2 vote getters for each artist. To quote Leon Redbone, “Fortunately, at this time, no decisions have been made as yet.” -
Question (From Fish42): Four poll requests: Ray Charles and Marshall Crenshaw Hell, another two poll requests: Alex Chilton/Big Star and Sam Cooke.
Answer: Four…4 requests in one week?!? Let me think about this. OK. I squeezed Alex Chilton in as a headliner in Week 37 & Made Week #42 (Subtiled Fish42 Week): A combination of Ray Charles (who I shouldn’t have omitted), Sam Cooke (Who sang my Wedding song) and Marshall Crenshaw (who played Buddy Holly or John Lennon? in a stage production…not that he’s a good match for the other 2, but it’ll have to do). See Issue #7 for more details. -
Question (From WSLer): Can I make a request for a Neil Diamond poll?
Answer: I knew this was gonna happen the minute we commissioned an Abba poll. Haven’t booked the D’s yet, but I’ll be sure and match him up with similar artists from the D’s (any ideas?) -
Question (From White Lightning): What does it take to get an artist a poll? One suggestion? I mean, any artist that wouldn’t garner at least 20 or so votes over the course of the week, doesn’t really rate.
Answer: It used to require a request & someone to 2nd it, not anymore. The worst that could happen is no one except you votes (see The Bonzo Dog Band Poll: 2 requests but only 2 voters…1 a little late) / FYI, I’ve personally passed by a lot of bands I really like because I thought they wouldn’t poll well. That being said, I’m shocked at the number (or lack thereof) of votes almost every week. You can rarely predict the outcome or the response level week to week. I try to be unbiased (sometimes I’ll make a snide remark about Pop Muzak artists) and have been unable to vote a few times myself. If I don’t know an artist well enough (as with Neko Case, Belle & Sebastian and The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band) or I don’t like their music (as with Phil Collins, Neil Diamond and Jim Croce). If you wanna request a poll, just ask. I only rejected 1 request so far and that was very early on. In hindsight, I shouldn’t have. Someone, I don’t remember who asked for an Atlanta Rhythm Section poll and I poo-poo’d it. (I’m too lazy to look it up now, but if the person who asked is still around, I’ll make retribution sometime down the road).
