The fourth of the “B” bands: Jeff Beck / The Jeff Beck Group. (Refrain from Yardbirds selections, they’ll have their own poll if we ever get to the Y’s). Once again, if you feel we’ve alphabetically passed over a band say so…if not, next week will feature The Beastie Boys.
A small aside: I’m not at all biased toward today’s contemporary artists, it’s just in most cases their smaller sized discographies would make selecting 6 favorite tracks a rather difficult or daunting task.

On with the poll. Here are my 6 Jeff Beck picks:

  1. You Shook Me
  2. Beck’s Bolero
  3. Gets Us All In The End
  4. I Ain’t Superstitious
  5. Freeway Jam
  6. Going Down Even though it’s not my all time favorite song, I think it is the epitome of rock music

Thanking you all in advance

Well, I’ve always preferred Beck’s bluesy-rock from the Rod Stewart era to his jazzy stuff. So, not surprisingly, three of the tracks I vote for feature Rod Stewart!

#6- “Beck’s Bolero”

#5- “Manic Depression” (a Hendrix cover with Seal on vocals)

#4- “People, Get Ready” (from “Flash”)

#3- “Black Cat Moan” (with Beck, Bogert & Appice)

#2- “Let Me Love You” (from “Truth”)

#1- “All Shook Up” (from “Beck-Ola,” an Elvis cover that completely re-interprets the song… and ends up being waaay better than the original)

But I also have to add the WORST piece of garbage Beck has ever been associated with: “Hi Ho Silver Lining”

  1. Blues Deluxe
  2. The Pump
  3. Goin’ Down
  4. Beck’s Bolero
  5. Morning Dew
  6. Shapes of Things (from “Truth”)

It’s no coincidence that four of my favorite six are from “Truth.” Ol’ Jeff’s spent over 35 years trying to live up to that album!

I saw Jeff Beck around 1980 at the Berkeley amplitheater. Going Down was the encore, and man did that sucker rock. Then he snapped all of his guitar strings with his two thumbs.

Remember the live Beck albumn recorded in Japan from around 1978? I think it was in the middle of Blue Wind, he cuts into Train Kept A Rolling. Later, when asked why, he said some dumb ass reporter told Beck that “he did a pretty good cover of Aerosmith.”
