Top Gun stars 4 decades later

What do people think about the photo comparisons? There are even more to be found on Google, some where Kelly McGillis looks ok for her age, others where she doesn’t.
And is Tom Cruise a real life Dorian Gray?

What’s your point in asking?

It depends on whether those pictures were from before Kelly McGillis lost a lot of weight or after.

Why is it that no one cares what Danny Devito or Jack Nicholson looks like today vs 40 years ago?

Some people do. But men are far more likely to comment on women than vice versa.

There is also the age-old dichotomy that, for very round numbers, most men think most women peak in attractiveness at age ~20 while most women think most men peak at more like ~40.

So it’s easier to make “40 years later” comparisons w women.

IOW sexism. Men & women are different critters w different interests.

ETA: I’m no Tom Cruise fan but he’s certainly aging far better than the rest of the guys in his high school graduating class. Good genes, good luck, and hard work paying off.

Oddly enough, these before / after meme things always choose a couple where one or both are outliers on aging well or badly.

John Belushi is looking especially unwell these days. Probably easy to find an actress he once played against who’s looking plenty hot for her age now.

40 years ago, too.

These kinds of threads have recently been given pretty short amounts of rope by the mods, so the OP shouldn’t be surprised to see it closed at some point.

And fillers, Botox, a personal trainer, Photoshop, etc. Same as many of the women.

I was going to say…these celebrities with bulky bank accounts and loads of free time can afford a dietician, healthy food prepred by a personal chef, personal trainer, doctor shopping, cosmetic surgery, therapists, etc. that most people can’t afford or have time to manage. Why anyone listens to what they have to say about “living your best life” is beyond me, but that’s a topic for another thread.

Decomp’s a bitch.

Agreed.

The candid shots of him (and others) in public don’t benefit from their own publicists’ photoshopping. But they may get some “treatment” positive or negative from whoever took the shot.

I suspect some celebs get tired of being “on” all the time in public and they end up going out in comfy or ratty clothes, using poor posture, not managing their facial expression, etc. Those celebs end up w crappy looking pix circulating.

Others are more aggressive about maintaining their aura and are simply never seen in public less than fully put together and consciously acting the role of their chosen public persona.

Ah, that must be exhausting.

But it pays well.

And also explains the allure of private flights, private resorts, etc., catering to that crowd.

I was expecting more from such a provocative post.

Let’s be fair: I mean, Val Kilmer (65) looks pretty bad and couldn’t even be in Maverick because of health issues, and Tom Skerritt is OLD (91) and looks it. Rick Rossovich is only 67 and looks like Michael Ironside (74). Meg Ryan looks fine for a “woman of a certain age”.

James Tolkan looks about the same, and as Marty McFly said, “Didn’t he ever have hair?”

Danny Devito looks pretty damn good for his age and lifestyle compared to 40 years ago. He just didn’t look great 40 years ago.

Val Kilmer was in Maverick. He can’t speak so that was dubbed in. It’s more complicated than that but that will do for now. Unlike Devito he was a very pretty guy to the difference is striking.

I didn’t mean for the thread to be provocative. The photo came up on my feed and I was just very struck at how young Tom Cruise still looks compared to other people his age, while Kelly McGillis seems to be aging like a normal person.

I’d say that a little differently. Age is not the same as decrepitude.

In her least favorable pix, McGillis is looking pretty decrepit while Cruise in his most favorable pix is looking not even a smidgen decrepit. At the same time, both look much older than their youthful pictures.

Cruise is keeping himself in insanely good shape. It’s helping him with his looks and his ability to still do insane stunts in movies.

When people decided to look up McGillis around the time of the Topgun sequel there were altered pictures going around making her look much worse than she does. Typical clickbait.

Yep, he’s clearly had work done. He has good plastic surgeons. He’s a top action movie star whose livelihood depends on looking the part. Why anyone would compare him to someone who doesn’t need to live up to that standard and for whom being a star isn’t her #1 priority is beyond me.

Tell that to J.F. Sebastian.
