I never saw a thread on it but Sundance channel’s series Top of the Lake is starting a marathon at 10 am PST today. I really loved this series- it’s starring Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men) as a New Zealand cop trying to find a pregnant 12 year old who has disappeared as soon as her pregnancy is discovered. Good sort of original mystery, a fairly hot yet troubled romance, a bizarre kind of cult going on and a few decent twists at the end. Would love to see a discussion on it if anyone else saw it.
Haven’t watched it yet but as a matter of interest did you know that top of the lake is a real place? It is situated at the head of Lake Wakatipu (New Zealand) where the township of Glenorchy lies under beautiful alpine mountains. There is the tiny village of Kinloch across the lake too.
It is a beautiful remote region with a harsh winter climate and glorious summer days. I spent a few days there recently with a friend who has a holiday home in Glenorchy.
That is really cool. I forgot to add that it’s got stunning scenery as well
. I think part of the theme is the beauty of the surroundings and the all too human nastiness of some of the people living in it.
Stunning scenery. But I thought it was a total waste of my time.
To keep me from wasting mine, what didn’t you like?
The scenery was stunning. The acting was very, very good and it was a solid story.
I thought that there were some pacing issues (some things felt a bit rushed and some were lingered on too long), but not horribly wrong, just a little off. And there were some arcs that I really didn’t get (see the spoiler) - but maybe would on a second viewing.
But all in all, very good 7 episodes of television.
Mostly, GJ and the women “recovering” at Paradise. I really didn’t understand what they were doing in the story nor why we spent so much time with them.
Just finished on the BBC.
Yep, certainly worth seeing. Slight issues with Campion’s attack on masculinity and maybe the (albeit subtle) religious iconography but certainly a serious piece of work.
Note: this is intelligent drama, there are no alien or zombie invasions, and no international terrah quashed in the nick of time by super efficient men in suits.
I thought the acting was generally quite good, but the plot seemed meandering and stretched to fill seven hours, particularly when it gets into the “obsessed detective at odds with her superiors” trope that we’ve all seen so often. Then after all that, the ending felt rushed, awkward, and anticlimactic.
Perhaps it would play better if watched all at once.
Not sure I can agree with much of that ^^
It’s essentially a redemption tale, told with several layers of Campion-isms.
Not going to change your life but more intelligent than most.
I can agree with all of that. ![]()
I watched this when Sundance first showed it, and found it enthralling. I’m glad to see it’s going to be shown again.
(It’s not formulaic. For some of us, that’s a plus, but the lack of familiar tropes may put off some viewers who like to know what they’re getting into.)
