Torchwood - clarifications sought (Open Spoilers)

Actually, not only is he gay but he recently married his partner of 16 years in Cardiff, Wales.

Are people here familiar with him as a singer or just from TV? I first saw him in the Kennedy Center’s production of Company a few years ago.

I just caught up with this episode tonight and I had a few questions. What exactly happened after they opened the rift and Jack killed the big destroyer creature? Did time go back a day, a week? How was Reese still alive? I really didn’t get the mechanics of all that, but I think it’s simpler if I watch this show without trying to really put too much thought into it. What is the significance of the hand in the jar? It was mentioned in the first episode too I think, but never explained.

I’m so glad we only have to wait a month until Season Two!

Time appeared to revert to when they opened the rift - they didn’t really say, nor did they account for things that happened because of it - (wether or not the other plague victims still had it or if they ‘got better’) Reese was a notable exception.

The hand in the jar is the Doctor’s - it fell to earth during that fight with the aliens - its Jack’s ‘Doctor Detector’ - the fingers start wiggling whenever the Doctor is around.

That was a lotta handsome in one kiss.

I’m a little fuzzy about a couple details.

What about the people whose life the Bad-Ass from the Rift ate? Are they still dead? If they’re not, it seems like there should be two time resettings. And if not, if people really did see a fifty foot tall Dio album cover mucking about Cardiff, can Gwen please tell her sweet baboo just a little about what she does? Not enough to change much, but enough to end his constant whining. Or would that take away his character’s reason for existing?

Another thing. Jack … Jack overfed it to death? He pulled a Mr. Creosote on it? I’m sorry, but my local Torchwood’s Policies and Procedures manual points out that while throwing sandwiches at a pursuing monstrosity may be a good delay tactic, it is not to be used offensively.

Oh, something else in our P&P manual – any machines or apparatus that are not to be turned on under any circumstances, are not to be left temptingly in the middle of the office in slightly disassembled states. Staff will know of such devices only on a need to know basis which, given the aforementioned status of the devices, there will be no need to know.

Why did Jack ask Gwen – and only Gwen – to drive him to monster central? Wasn’t that kind of dangerous, bringing a non-bad-wolf-protected human to the general vicinity of the life-sucking-monstrosity? Was he getting sick of her brooding? And why couldn’t he drive himself? Was he worried that the SUV woudl get a parking ticket? He wanted someone to carry his body back? Dramatic tension? Was there any rational?

Ok, lastly, why was Jack so pissed at Owen, when a few months/weeks ago it turned out that Jeeves was secretly keeping a proto-Cyber-blowup-doll in the basement? Seems that in comparing the two sins, Owen surely should have gotten off with less then he did. Or was Jeeves getting off of Jack part of his lenient treatment? And given that, isn’t the whole emotional bond between him and his former Cyber-girl a bit watered down? (Another bit from our local P&P manual: when staffing is at a premium, no employee is to be fired for past transgressions during a crisis. Once the crisis is resolved, the matter should be referred to the H&OR (Human and Other Resources) Department.)

Actually, I know the answer to all of the above … a wizard did it.

If the one in Cardiff is “Torchwood Four”, was Jack involved in the first three? He DID tell the Doctor that he had created Torchwood in The Doctor’s honor…

-Joe

I thought he created this Torchwood after the Cybermen/Dalek fiasco that was the season finale a year ago.

Yes - the original torchwood’s were all out to destroy the Doctor as well as alient threats - based upon the events with the Wolfmen - this Torchwood, rebuilt from the one destroyed in the aforementioned battle, is run by Jack ‘in honor’ of the Doctor.

Is that what they’re calling it these days?

I liked the touch at the end … “for the right Doctor.”

Regarding Jack’s sexual inclinations - I’m not convinced that either sentience or breathing is required. More like, if he can’t have sex with it, he’ll try to have sex at it. Traumatized doorknobs and knotholes and potted plants… hide your poodles, daughters, and sons. Mind you, I don’t think he’d ever force the issue, all parties consenting (where that even applies) it’s just that he is open to … everything, really.

I think “omnisexual” probably covers it.

I keep hearing things like this. I haven’t gotten around to watching the new Dr. Who yet. Is there something about Jack there which leads you to conclude he’ll have sex with potted plants and poodles?

I’ve seen him kiss two guys and mention an old boyfriend. Nothing about plants, animals, children or inanimate objects.

Where does this idea come from?

Only thing I can think of is that Jack has a habit of coming onto everyone.

-Joe

He chats up an admittedly rather attractive insect lady in the Doctor Who episode Utopia.

So he’s sort of a Kirk.

Jack’s not entirely indifferent to women. Rewatching “Day One” last night, I thought he seemed pretty interested by the the girl-on-(alien-occupied)-girl makeout down in the cells.

(John Barrowman is gay and married, yes, but let’s not confuse the actor and the character.)

So I’m still going with Jack being omnisexual. Or “try-sexual”; I like that one.

He chats up the Trinny and Susanna robots in “Bad Wolf.” Depending on one’s view of “inanimate”…

Okay, it’s time for me to start watching Dr. Who. I’m on season one and just finished episode three “The Unquiet Dead.” There’s a character named Gwyneth, played by the same actress as Gwen in Torchwood. Both from Cardiff, with the former having grown up on top of a time rift and having a special connection with it. Coincidence?

There’s nothing that indicates Jack will sleep with children or non-sentients, or something unable to properly consent for any other reason. Just that ‘able to consent’ is the only qualifier he has. Age (so long as it’s not a kid), sex, and species are demonstrably meaningless to him.

I just finished watching the two episodes from season one of Dr. Who when the introduce Captain Jack. It makes more sense now. He’s from the 51st century, and in the 51st century humans have spread throughout the galaxy (universe?) and developed a taste for “dancing” with its variety of species.

Unknown as of the end of S1 of Torchwood and S3 of Doctor Who. It may simply be that Russell Davies liked the actress enough to cast her in the new series. The actress who played Martha Jones had earlier played one of the Torchwood drones in the penultimate ep of S2 of Doctor Who.

Oh, my freaking god, yes! I never even saw this show, but I searched for that clip on YouTube and…gah…uhhh…wow…is it hot in here? fans self I don’t even KNOW those people but my heart was breaking…among other physical responses…
