Toronto Dopers?

Hey y’all… I’ll be heading up to T.O. for American Thanksgiving weekend - Nov 22-25. Any Dopers in the T.O. area interested in getting together? Dinner, drinks, carousing, whatever?

Dinner, drinks and carousing sounds like a great idea!

[sub]Especially since I chickened out last time around.[/sub]

Whereabouts will you be?

I’m staying in Scarborough, but this is a Christmas shopping trip, so I expect to be spending most of my time in the downtown area. As for the venue, I’m open to suggestions! My only request is that it be somewhere relatively easily accessible, as driving in Toronto terrifies me…

I’ll see if I can join in the festivities.
(I live an hour west of TO so I’ll hold of until a place is picked out. Then I’ll see if I can make the arrangements to meet up. )

Oooh, I live in Scarborough! Umm, sounds fun, although I’m not really an avid doper, so I’d feel outsider-ish.

Hmm.

eh?

No outsider-ish feelings allowed. I’ve been off the pages for months, only recently returned, so I’m no more insider-ish than you.

Kwyjibo, as previously stated, I’m fairly open to suggestions. Globetrotter, what’s your locale?

I’m thinking of something on the west end. In Mississauga.

No offence, but Scarborough is not a place I like to spend too much time in. (Call it a fear of becoming a statistic)

Downtown TO is cool, but there is the parking issue.

Mississauga is just a jaunt across the city, has some great pubs, and you don’t pay for parking.

My 2 cents. =)

Mississauga isn’t bad, although for us Carless Urban TorontoDopers it can be a bit of a hike. Fortunately, I live in the wast end. There are a fair number of restaurants (mostly decent mid-price chains) and theatres and such (plus the Living Arts Centre) in the vicinity of Square One, the large mall that serves as the “downtown” of Mississauga. Plenty of parking, and the Mississauga bus station is right there too for those coming from downtown Toronto on the bus (Mississauga bus #26 from the Islington subway station).

The Square One area is exactly what I was thinking. Lot’s o stuff there.

Hell…we could meet up at Playdium!

(I live in the K-W area, so that’s why I figured to meet in Miss. Kinda like a half way point for those east and west.)

I live downtown and I don’t have a car. While I don’t mind taking the subway, I draw the line at taking the subway and the bus. I just hate commuting.

The only place I visit in Mississauga is the airport, so I’m not much help in that respect. Fortunately Sunspace is more helpful!

Mississauga was just a suggestion.

Next?

Well, just how long does it take to get from Islington station to Square One? (once a year won’t kill me, I suppose)

The #26 bus goes along Burnhamthorpe, west from Kipling. It usually needs about half an hour. If you’re really unlucky with traffic, 45 minutes.

On weekdays during peak hour, there is the #86 express, which uses the bus lanes on Dundas Street, as well as a bit of the 427, and is a little faster. The last one of those leaves Islington around 7PM I think, but you’d still have to take a regular #26 bus back.

There are other buses that go between Islington and Square One, but they go by different routes and take longer.

So it looks it will take place in Mr.Mississauga.

Ok, now just need the location, day and time.

I’m thinking Saturday in the late afternoon/evening?

Hmmm… Mississauga, huh?

That’ll be a bit of a trick for me, not knowing my way around AT ALL.

And unfortunately, Saturday afternoon will also potentially cut into my ‘time-spent-with-brother-who-is-being-nice-enough-to-let-me-sleep-at-his-house’ time.

How does anyone/everyone feel about Friday late afternoon/evening? I may even be able to do Mississauga then, as I could make that my arrival in the area time.

Keep the thread alive here, people, work with me

Alright, anywhere is alright by me, as I am about an hour southwest of Toronto…in Cambridge…
Kwyjibo…I did not know we were next door!!

Friday works for me.

Don’t worry about not knowing your way around, Kim. I’ve been in TO for 11 years now and I sure don’t know my way around Mississauga!

Here’s another thought…

If paying for parking is a problem, those outside of T.O. can also take the subway in - park at the subway stop, it’s substantially less than downtown, if not free (depending where you manage to park)…

I’ll be in Eaton Centre a lot, and would love to meet there if anyone else can manage that.

Friday or Saturday will work if it’s downtown.

Can we get some kind of vote here or something?

For me, it is a time issue as well.

I will be driving an hour just to get to Mississauga. Then there is the trip into TO.

If it is in the west end, I’ll see ya there. If it is Downtown, I’ll have to catch the next one. :frowning:
