"Touching Evil" 3/19

Anyone catch the new “Touching Evil” episode on USA last Friday? It was pretty good but not as tight as the pilot.

Pros

 • Cyril Kemp is a recurring character – yay!
 • Creegan’s mental issues haven’t devolved into scenery chewing ticks (a credit to the actor)
 • disturbing use of the kid from “Kate & Allie”.
 • “Airplane” – esque spatial issues always crack me up. Spatial issues due to brain damage? Even funnier!

[c]Cons**

 • Braca is still a flat one-note character. She needs 3 dimensions stat!
 • What exactly was the point of Creegan’s insomnia?
 • The “twist” wasn’t such a surprise.

I’m liking this show - it’s trying to find it’s legs right now. I’m hoping that once they get the kinks worked out, it’ll be more slick like the pilot movie.

And am I the only one who would love a *Monk * cross-over?

I think the show is very tenuously balanced right now.

It has to tread a fine line, with its irreverant, silly elements, and its extremely dark themes. And the problem is that if they slip to far either way, they are going to go plunging into the Abyss that surrounds the tiny island of Suspension of Disbelief.

For this reason, I was very disappointed by the lack of consenquences to Creegan’s actions in the pilot.
I mean, come on! He’s whining that they aren’t going to seek a convinction when he physically assaulted the suspect and then stole his dog? Sweet Christs on a crutch! He should have been in jail or at the very least, back on leave! We have a Bill of Rights for a reason: to protect people from government agents who are absolutely sure we’re guilty, before that guilt has been demonstrated in a court of law! I hope I don’t sound like a frothy-mouthed civil libertarian when I say that knowing that he was right about the guilt of the suspect does not make his actions acceptable!

And wasn’t it just so pat and convenient that they guy had killed himself? I can see that the whole scene was to show that Creegan was in a very Dark Place, and is willing to sacrifice himself to Do the Right Thing for Society, but I was annoyed that he was so neatly saved from the consequences of his choice.
However, this doesn’t stop me from loving Creegan’s character. It doesn’t hurt that Jeffery Donovan strikes me as a cross between Val Kilmer and D. B. Sweeney, i.e. totally munchable. I like Branca, too, though I also would like to see some dimension to her character beyond the current Scully-to-Creegan’s-Mulder mode.

This episode was better, though, like AmericanMaid I saw the twist coming from a mile away. But when Creegan did whacky and dangerous stuff, he paid a price for it, which was good.

The “Kate & Allie” kid played a similar character on “Joan Of Arcadia” recently. He was an outcast type that Joan “saved” before he supposedly was going to go on a Columbine-style shooting rampage.
Yes, the Branca character needs to be fleshed out a bit.
I also love that Cyril is a recurring character.

What do you mean by " ‘Airplane’ – esque spatial issues" ?

Bibliocat, remember in “Airplane” the guy says he has a drinking problem and thus demonstrates that he has a problem actually getting the glass to his mouth? Creegan has twice demonstrated he can’t throw food into his mouth. The first time, ironically enough, on an ariplane in the pilot (ugh, I am overloading on airplane puns!) The second time was in the agency when he was munching peanuts or crackers. That’s what I meant.

Oh, okay, I get it. I forgot he did that in the first show.
