He was in a couple of episodes while Laurie was on maternity leave. Not up to Vern’s standards, but still, better than Hildi.
Now he’s gone, and he’s apparently behind the scenes as a sewing co-ordinator. Anyone know what happened? And why ditch him and keep the Horror That Is Kia?
(I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that it won’t be a tension-filled-gasp-with-horror-scratch-your-head-in-disbelief show if you have wonderful designers all the time. Maybe Vern is the only “good” one they want to have.)
I believe that Edward was promoted to designer from sewing coordinator, and he may still be working in that role on episodes where he’s not designing. I read on the TS boards that we saw tons of Hildi in the beginning of the season because they lumped all of her episodes together because she lives in France and she was coming over to do group so shows at a time so that she wouldn’t have to be traveling back and forth so often.
I forget the exact logistics, but I think that Kia and Edward were both given half a share of episodes each (i.e. if the “main” designers typically do 18 shows, Kia and Edward were each given 9).
In any case, I’m with you on this one…way too much Hildi, Kia is a most definitely a Horror and I miss Edward terribly.
Anyone catch Doug on the Daily Show last night? He was pretty good, but the funniest part was the fact that Jon know an insane amount about the show. He made fun of Hilde for most of the interview.
Hosts always say they watch the stuff their guests are shlepping, but this time it was obvious that Jon really was a fan.
I’m so glad annoying, useless, untalented Laurie is on maternity leave…hopefully she will decide to have 6 or 7 more kids in a row, fast - and move to France as well.
I agree that Vern is probably the only one who consistantly turns out a good room, and he even listens to the owners when they beg not to paint over their 16th century table…unlike other designers who would paint it orange and then paste yellow happy smiles on it.
Sheesh, I like Laurie, and I didn’t think all that much of Edward. Not bad, but no pizzazz like my man Frank. I hate most of Frank’s designs, but he’s hilarious-- I think my favorite line from him was, “Don’t let me sew anything. One time I serged a whole garage! I don’t know when to stop!”
On the rest, agreed: Vern excellent, Kia scary wildcard, Hilde reliably terrible.
I would love to work with Frank and have either Laurie or Vern do my room.
Vern is such a perfectionist, and Laurie has an eye for color, I think. Hildi is just too frightening for words, Doug is a prima donna, Kia can’t plan worth sh–, and Gen…sometimes she can pull a room together, sometimes she can’t.
I love Genevieve and Vern the best.
I’ve only seen one episode with Kia, and I did not like her at all. I mean, interesting ideas, but over all…blech.
My SO is also a big fan of Gen, or “blondie” as he calls her. But the only reason he watches (he says) is in the hopes that one episode she’ll finally take off her shirt.
But I know that he likes it for other reasons too. He tried to convince me that we could do an adult race car room like the one Vern did for the toddler.
I agree with ivylass – I’d like to work with Frank and have Vern or Laurie do my room. I think Vern and Laurie’s rooms are consistently good, and Genevieve’s are usually good. Hildi is too full of herself to be of use to anybody, but she has some good ideas. Doug can be touch and go, Edward is okay, and Kia is nothing special (that Egyptian room was a nightmare). I think Frank is hilarious but his designs are a bit kuntry kraft for my taste.
Bite your tongue, that was Doug that came up with that nightmare, not Vern. I don’t think Vern’s done a kid’s room yet.
Speaking of the car room…didn’t the parents say they wanted more room for the rugrat to play in? And didn’t Doug do the exact opposite once he got both halves of the car installed?
Wrong! Vern most certainly did a car-themed kid’s room, complete with a red race-car bed (with working headlights in a toy trunk at the foot), road signs, a motorcycle-shaped tire swing suspended from the ceiling, and a train that was also suspended from the ceiling over the bed. It was wicked cool.
I apologize, then. I hadn’t seen that episode…just the one where Doug took an actual car, cut in in half, and attached it to both sides of the room in a Route 66 motif. One half was the bed, the other half was the toybox, but they didn’t have enough time to actually put in the toybox.
I should have known there was a Good Car Room…Vern can put pink polka dots on a neon purple wall and make it work…
That Daily Show with Doug as guest was great, especially with the mentioned slam that John Stewart gave to Hildi.
The worst of the worst was when she painted HER OWN FACE on someone’s wall! She said something like “Oh, I wanted a face and I couldn’t think of any but my own. Tee hee.”
What a narcissist!
All the good designers on that show are good because they take into account the tastes of the people who live there. Not that there’s anything wrong with pushing a few boundaries, but to totally disregard the owners because one has some ‘cool’ idea one wants to try no-matter-what is just selfish.
Vern did that great soccer themed room with the soccerball tiles (it’s been a while) on the floor and black and white everywhere for the kids who were soccer mad.
It was great.
But then, it was Vern. I’ve never seen him do a “bad” room… there have been rooms weren’t me, but they still looked technically great, and they were the homeowners. Which is what matters.
My wife and I are in the habit of also watching Changing Rooms, the BBC source for Trading Spaces, and the most striking thing about it is the designers almost always listen to the homeowners and can’t seem to bully their team as much.
They have far fewer train wrecks than the American version.
