That’s one way to take care of your lineup of admirers…

Six Hundred Dollars?!! You could almost take a cab there for less!
I got a return ticket Toronto to Montreal on Via for $125! But that was buying months in advance. When are you leaving? The cheap seats fill up fast.
I looked up Toronto to Belleville (the stop before Napanee) for a random couple of weekdays in August, and it was $73 return. Even in first class it was less than $225. Maybe they could pick you up in Belleville?
Oh wait. Two of you Toronto-Napanee return in first class is $281 return, each. So that’s close to $600. But a lot more trains stop in Belleville than Napanee.
Aargh! This is why it drives me nuts to have Papa Tiger come home early – he ends up doing some work, and that invariably involves getting on the phone and talking waaaay too loud so I can’t hear a damn thing over him. If he would just not put the phone on speaker, it would make his life AND mine easier, but I cannot convince him of that. Except that I get very passive-aggressive when he does it to me and keep saying, “What? What? I can’t make out what you’re saying,” till he turns off the speaker. I’m evil that way.
It doesn’t help that I have a guy with an African accent I’m trying to hear and comprehend over the too-loud phone conversations, either, whose pronunciation is, er, interesting. For example, he just said the word “deliberate” as “DAY-lih-brate.” Riiight.
How the heck did mud get in there against the pressurized gas? Be sure they check out your gas appliances to be sure mud’s not gunking them up as well - they should be willing to do this as it’s not your fault that mud was in the line.
If it’s not much longer than the 50 feet they’ve already pulled up, maybe they’d be willing to replace the whole line to the house. Around here, that’s probably what they’d do anyway as plastic gas lines are coming into favor - it’s one piece end to end, bright yellow, very thick-walled tubing. Almost impossible to put a shovel through, and lasts nearly forever.
Someone’s Probably Looking For A New Job Department… We lost network connectivity this morning for close to two hours. The problem was that someone at a company that maintains part of our high-capacity network fiber entered a disconnect order in error and all of our buildings in San Francisco were knocked offline. Oops!
That happened to me five times this afternoon. Argh.
Sunspace, we’re going to Kingston on Friday, so that’s why it’s not cheap. Sigh. We’re going. Friday through Sunday. And Via kept telling me the cheapest tickets cost about $480 round-trip. Yeah, you could almost take a cab. The more expensive ones were about $600.
Thanks for pointing that out to me - no, I don’t really pay attention to my post count. It equates to about 2000 posts per year - not a lot, all things considered.
**MamaTigs ** - I got our booth assignment - #21 - for the 8th. I’m assuming you’ll drive to my place, then we’ll head to Leonardtown together, although you could just meet me there if you want. Either way will work for me.
I sent off all the requested ceramics this afternoon, so those who asked can be watching their respective mailboxes.
I had a pretty good night last night, all things considered. Usually, the house is exceptionally noisy when I’m home alone, but the gremlins were on sabbatical, I guess. I did awake with a cat sleeping in FCD’s spot, against his pillows, a little dog under my side of the bed, and a big dog on the floor at the foot of my bed. I was sleeping in the wild kingdom! Goofy animals!
Well, off to make some food-like substance for supper. The supper fairy failed me again. Just once I’d like to come home to snowy linens and shiny silver and a gourmet feast ready to be snarfed down. Is that asking too much??
Thanks for the tips, gotti. I’ll talk to them about it when they come back in the morning. The theory is that the mud got in there because the competing utility digging stuff up across the way dug through part of the line that leads to my house. (I just took pictures and will post later…) The gas people think that they dug, cut my pipe, then added more water so that they could dig more. The result is a big honking mess. They came inside and opened the pipe up to blow the pipe clean from the main line into the house. The mud doesn’t seem to have made it into the house. They also lit the water heater pilot and made sure the stove was working again.
So far, everything except the washer and dryer is OK. Can’t seem to get either of them to work. Is it likely that there’s some type of shut-off switch that they missed? The circuit breakers all look OK, so I don’t think that’s the problem. I figured I should check to make sure that the outlets are actually getting electricity (I don’t have any lights on either appliance to check that). Any other ideas? It seems like an odd coincidence that the outlet would go at the same time as the gas went. I’m going to ask the next gas person who stops by, but thought I’d collect ideas here too.
Gotta get back to work. (I should never try to work from home…!)
**gt ** - have you cycled the circuit breaker for the washer and dryer, even if it doesn’t look popped? Is the washer plugged into a ground fault interrupt outlet - the kind that has a built-in circuit breaker? That’s all I got.
I have been trying to get caught up all day, and I finally did!
I can’t remember anything though. :smack:
My friend and I went to this Mediterranean-International grocery store for lunch today. They have a deli. When you walk in the smell of spices just about knocks you down, and it smells delicious!! I had a ground beef skewer wrapped in a pita, and rice pilaf. She had a chicken kebab, and gave me all her roasted veggies 'cuz she doesn’t like them. Next time we are going to share a big plate lunch. It was so good! Than afterward we wandered around and looked at all the exotic foods. I bought some real maple syrup (not that exotic, huh?) and some Belgian chocolate. We saw the weirdest stuff, like baby eels in a jar. They looked like worms. Ick.
Hey, FCM, can you post your photo site of your pottery again? I was telling this same friend how you throw pots and stuff, and I want to show her your things. I had a hell of a time searching for it, especially with the outage(s). Thanks!
Looks like TS Erin is bearing down on South Texas - we oughta get a bunch of rain out of this. At least it will lower the temps to the mid 90’s.
We just better not get a hurricane to mess up our trip to Daytona. Bad things would happen, believe me. If y’all remember, the last time we went to Daytona, Katrina hit. We drove, and we were well past New Orleans when it hit, thank goodness, but coming back was scary as hell. Everything was closed, so we brought 25 gallons of gas with us, and some food. It’s only a ~20 hour trip, but man, we saw tremendous devastation.
Wait a sec - you don’t bookmark everything that has anyhing to do with me?? And here I thunk you was my friend…
Here’s the link but the site is down just now. If I remember correctly, there are several subalbums of pics.
Done supper. Dishwasher loaded, dehumidifiers emptied, cat box cleaned, plants watered. I’m about to get into my comfy robe, since I don’t intend to leave the house any more today. I expect I’ll hit the sheets early, too - I’m really tired. I dread the upcoming weekend when I have to reset my internal clock for a week of mid shift. ugh. At least it’s only a week.
Second date, not so bad. I’ve discovered I prefer hanging out with this guy face-to-face than communicating with him. Good sign? I dunno. I suppose it’s better than the other way around.
Now I have to pack AGAIN for my trip tomorrow. Ah well. I’m not looking forward to the packing, but definitely looking forward to seeing friends. Too bad I won’t be able to meet Dopers though. Next time, I swear! And there’s the Chicago-fest to look forward to.
Here’s wishing for good weather for all us travelers!
The registers have to be shut down before the main PC can be put into end of day maintenance. The one register didn’t like me putting my self into the system in the middle of the day and wouldn’t shut down. It took helpdesk 30 minutes before they could figure out how ot fix the problem.
I’ve cycled it several times. Nuttin’. If it’s got a GFCI, it’s not a standard one, but I guess I should go look for switches somewhere I’m not expecting them. I’ve looked at the back of the washer for switches, but can’t see the back of the dryer very well.
I’m done working for the day and am tired.
Wish I could do laundry, but at least I did dishes.
Glad the date went well, Hank. Maybe gives you something to look forward to between trips.
Just made my plane and hostel reservations for Chicago…woo hooo!
Gah–the lib won’t let me quit. I tried, I really did. I just can’t squeeze in another thing this week. Home from work, almost 2 hours late–these people who drop off elderly relatives and then aren’t around (or answering their phone) when it’s time for Grandma to go home deserve something bad–I have a paucity of creative badness at present.
Off to be grumpy. I’m good at that. Tomorrow is busy, busy, busy, as are the next 3 days. Blech.
gt , I think this is what you said you were going to do, but if you haven’t - try this: Take a small appliance…hand mixer, small lamp - something like that, and try that in the outlet. If whatever you bring powers up - it’s something in the appliances, if not, you know the outlet has no power.
Yay - I finally got off my e-butt and did the Kid’s FAFSA for this school year. I keep meaning to, but it’s such a pain in the butt sitting here with my tax return open. Anyway it’s done. Rah.
Ok, I’m doing squat tonight, I worked too hard today.
Mork, Lunch and/or anyone else who knows computers better than I do which would include just about everyone, I suppose. Please help.
Just a few minutes ago, my anti-virus Trend Micro asked me if I wanted something to access the internet. It said “Windows Explorer” and it had checked the box that I did not want to be reminded again. So I absentmindedly hit “deny access.”
And now whenever I click on any icon, I get “Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.”
I got here by clicking on the anti-virus icon on the user bar which brings up an internet connection as part of the tutorial. But how do I get the rest of it working?
I suspect that it’s in safe mode which is why I can’t access anything. How do I get out of that? Or does anyone have any ideas about how to fix this? Thanks.
And er. . . hi everyone!!. . . still in panic mode about this. I’ll be back after I fix it.
Hi Heff! I’m not familiar with Trend Micro, but there’s probably something labeled options or tools or something similar that will list the rules that are set up for programs, sites, whatever. There are probably checkboxes or dropdown lists for each one that you can change. Sometimes there’s a box with tabs and you have to click the right tab to get to what you’re looking for. Also, there are sometimes buttons called Advanced or Properties that will have more information. Usually, if you root around enough of these, you’ll find what you’re looking for.
Wow! They really dug up a lot. Your really notice it when you get home at night and all the lights are blinking on the barricades set up around all the holes. There are metal plates on several of them too. There are about 18 of the kind that’s on the right in this illustration. I can see four or five more, but I think that they belong to the people who broke the gas line because their lights aren’t flashing.
Oh…lamps, I have a couple extra of those; possibly with bulbs in them. I was trying to think of what I had that I could plug into the outlets. Thanks, MBG!
I need to find stuff to leave out for the Kidney Foundation in the morning. But I’m tired, so I’m going to do it in the morning and not now.
