I’m curious though… if my usage was well below my total production, let’s say 56/114, is there any reason why I would be noticing sudden, large drops in wheat? Before I buffed up my fields, I was noticing that despite having a greater total production than total usage, every so often my wheat would drop by 50-60 points. This was during the newbie period, so I know I wasn’t being raided…

Don’t know. I noticed that my Wheat surplus from the beginning of the game dried up pretty fast when I was getting things up to level 2, and I didn’t have many wheat fields developed yet.
OK, Algher Village now has everything at Level 1, plus one wheat field at Level 2 (my Chieftain has promised me that if I get a field to Level 3 he will send me more resources - Go Teutons!).
For infrastructure I have my three Level 1 Buildings: Main, Embassy & Cranny.
I plan on getting my one Wheat field to level 3 (to see what sort of goodies get sent to me), and then keep up leveling production resources.
How can I tell how much “safe” time I have left? I want to get my Rally Point and Barracks built before that hits. If not, a Granary is going to be needed soon.
Alright, the alliance should be able to hold about 6 more people. If you had trouble joining before, try again. And if I need to resend an invite, let me know.
Woohoo - built my Rally Point! Of course, everyone around me is still on the safe list. And I don’t know how to build troops. And I still have most of my resources at 1 (with a few 2s). But durn it, I have my Rally Point!
Algher, You need a Level 3 Main Building, a Rally Point, and a Barracks to build troops. Grey, only one player needs to have a high level embassy. You should be able to join with a level 1 embassy.

So what you are saying is that I jumped the gun on building stuff when I should have been upgrading my crops?
The Academy allows you to research new troops. You need a level 3 Barracks to build it, and it will be expensive… I am just starting to get the resources myself.
The more I see of this game, the more I think that, at least when starting out, armies are a terrible idea: it seems so much cheaper to churn out a huge number of traps while maintaining a minimal number of Phalanxes to clean up whomever is left, and if you put a high priority on upgrading your warehouses and crannies, it seems kinda trivial to make it expensive and unprofitable for enemeis to attack your capital… maybe it gets harder when you have to build, defend, and conquer cities that can be taken back?
