Treason on the SDMB! TREASON, I say!!

The New York Sun says so! If only those paragons of liberty could be here and see the evil (EVIL, I say!) going on here! They’d be horrified at the Iraqi sympathizers rampant!

I am shocked and appalled! Get away from me, you Commie ratbastards! How dare you dirty this all-American message board with your pacifist traitor-filth! I gotta go shower!

Oh, and one more time:

TRAITORS!

(Although to break up my rant with an actual debate, I do wonder about the quote at the end of the article… How big WOULD public pressure be to “curb civil liberties” in the event of another major terrorist attack? Are we really on ice that thin…?)

i don’t think the ice is THAT thin, but more idiots will start listening to the crazies, and that won’t be good.

What a stupid article. Delaying protests is good, because:

The sad thing is that there’s very little correlation between the amount of protest and the actions of GWB so far.

What kind of paper is the NY Sun, anyway? Right-wing low-threshold tabloid, am I close?

There used to be a New York Sun in the old days. It got merged into the World Telegram & Sun, which got folded into the World Journal Tribune, which collapsed with a giant fart decades ago.

I’m not sure who or what revived the name, but I assume it is a very minor player in the N.Y. newspaper wars, probably competing for ad revenue with the Bay Ridge Weekly Shopper.

Hard to believe, but they’re managing to make the New York Post (your garden-variety sleaze tabloid) look good.

I think it was the Post with the UN SMACKDOWN! headline a few days ago, after Powell’s speech.

Good times.

FTR: The Sun launched just under a year ago, IIRC, partially by the guy who used to do the smartertimes.com website, Ira Stoll, partially by some other guys who are reasonably well-known in the print world. I think the idea is to be a more conservative version of the Times (the Post, the other NY “conservative” paper, is so…juvenile).

From what I’ve seen, it’s been a mixed bag thus far – some good stuff, some bad. The op-ed cited by the OP would fall into the “bad” category. Though to be fair, I’ve seen equally sloppy reasoning on the Times op-ed page. Circulation != wisdom.

Verily, the Post is a downright infantile paper, but they do write the best headlines in the newspaper industry.

The gold standard, of course, is the one from the 1970s when the Ford administration refused to bail out NYC from its financial crisis. The headline: “Ford to City: Drop Dead.”

My favorite from the few years I’ve lived up here is from when Jenna Bush was busted for underage drinking at an Austin bar/restaurant. The headline: “Jenna and Tonic.”

Good stuff. Comedy gold.

Are these demonstrators committing treason? From the U. S. Constitution:

These demonstrators aren’t "levying war against the United States. But, are they “adhering to [the US’s] Enemies, giving them aid and comfort”? I doubt it. First of all, it’s not clear that Iraq is our enemy. The protestors probably are giving comfort to Iraq. Whether they’re also giving aid to Iraq or adhering to Iraq is not so clear. Still, ISTM there may be a point where certain comments under certain circumstances could fulfill the Constitutional definition of treason.

As a comparison, when we were at war with North Vietnam, I heard protestors happily chant: Ho Ho Ho Chi Minh/Ho Chi Minh is gonna win! This chant could well fulfill the conditions of giving aid and comfort to an enemy and adhering to that enemy. However, none of these protestors were ever charged with treason.

For the record, I think the Sun editorial is just goofy.

Dear Editor—

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no reason to go to war with Iraq. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a reason to go to war with Iraq?

Virginia O’Hanlon

Dear Virginia:

Yes, child. Is your father"s name O’Hanlon too? How about your llittle friends? Do you know thier parents names? Would you like to win a prize for being a good American?

Omigod! I end up agreeing with december twice in one week! Excuse me, please – I’ve got to get over to Great Debates and start a thread entitled “The End of the World Is Near”!!

Oh, don’t be silly! Would the AntiChrist pick a name like december? Of course not! He would probably pervert some Xtian imagery, like a multiple of fish or…Say, wait a minute…isn’t a carp a fish?

Exsqueege me, people, but that editorial is not serious. Not a single word of it is truly believed by the authors. Read between the lines and get a grip.

It’s a possibility, but I don’t think so. The Sun, as far as I’ve seen it described, is pretty right-wing, and conservatives don’t really question the Iraq war at all, so it’s pretty unlikely that they’re being satirical.

(BTW, I found it almost scarily fun to yell “TREASON!” at the top of my virtual lungs. I’m beginning to see what they - those who do so IRL - see in it. :))
