Why isn’t Treasure Island (1934, starring Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper) available on DVD? It’s a classic!
Hell, I’m wondering why the silent version of Chicago wasn’t released on video and DVD to cash in on the recent musical version. I saw it at a revival house, and it’s terrific.
The devil spawn at Disney like to archive films and only release them when it damn well pleases them. Arrrrrr…
Says you!
Says I!
Says nothing!
You must be thinking of the 1950 version with Robert Newton. The one I’m looking for was by Warner Studios. (It’s on VHS, BTW – But I want it on DVD.)
The 1950 Disney version just came out on DVD.
The Warners version (or rather the MGM version which now belongs to Warners … confusing, isn’t it?) isn’t out yet, and probably won’t be out for a while. Warners seems to take their time releasing the old stuff. If it makes you any happier, they’ll be releasing DVDs of the Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and the Erroll Flynn Robin Hood later this year.
I thought the VHS was released by Turner or someone…?
The devil spawn at Warner like to archive films… oh hell…
(Takes a deep breath) MGM made the original movie back in 1934. Then in the 1960s/1970s, MGM’s film library was sold to various people. In the 1980s, the MGM library ended up in the hands of Ted Turner. More recently, Ted Turner merged with the Borg, er, Time/Warner. Which is how Warners ended up owning many of the classic MGM movies.
(Which is incredibly ironic, as back in 1934 MGM was the big media giant and Warner Brothers was the scrappy little underdog.)
