Treo 700P weirdness

This is the second brand-new Treo 700P in 5 days. Having wonked around with two units and three headsets, I’ve empirically proven that the headset jack and/ or software is faulty.

When a hardwired headset is plugged into the phone, I can hear perfectly through the headset speaker. However, the headset mic is NOT engaged. The caller hears my voice only through the regular mic on the handset. Utterly maddening. Both the phone and headset are the standard 2.5mm jacks.

Have established that the phone will work with either a mono or stereo headset jack. Or so the manual says. I have to get ahold of a stereo headset with mic today, though I know that the models out there are earbuds with a small dangling in-cable mic that I detest.

Anyone else with a 700 or 750 experienced this? I love the Palm OS and hate the idea of going on to another brand totally. Similarly, I won’t be blowing the big bucks on a Jawbone any time soon and do like my hardwired headsets. I did ask and was not surprised to hear the phone tech say he’d never heard of this problem. After all, I suspect they are not allowed to admit that there are issues with their phones.

If I dump the Treo today, what Verizon PDA do people use? Do I go for the Motorola Q, or the Blackberry? What a pain. Like most folks, I’m heavily invested in the peripherals. Anyway, has anyone experienced this and is there a work-around ?

I’m sticking with the 650 for now. I haven’t had any problems with mine.

I swapped the Treo 700P for a Blackberry Pearl.

Identical problem. It appears that ( despite the Treo’s documentation to the contrary ) you cannot use a mono headset in the device. The Pearl came with a stereo headset with a mic. Hence, 4 metal contacts, 3 insulating bands on the jack.

My mono headset did not work any better on the Pearl. Now, I gotta find a real headset with stereo jacks on it. They used to be quite common for use with computers but now I only see USB headsets. Dammit. Can you imagine? I’ll be walking around with my sexy little Pearl and a huge USB to Stereo Mini jack hanging off the side?

I changed from treo to moto 9 m and I adore it. I read ebooks, and have something like 50 books, about 100 songs and the movie M as well as a couple of music videos on the 4 gig micro SD. I prefer a wired headset to bluetooth and have had no issues with it. The internet is a bit slow loading, but that is to be expected in a cell phone=)

Haven’t bought the Micro Mini Teeny Tiny SD card yet. God they’re pricey. I’m still learning my way around it but I think I’ll enjoy it once I grok it properly. This business with the headphones, my my.

On eBay I found a VERY nifty device. It basically allows you to take any stereo headset for an MP3 player and turn it into a cell phone headset. It has a stereo jack and a mic built in. Quite a nifty idea. I ordered three of them ( from China, I believe ). Might be a great fix. Will report back in seven months when they arrive.

Next to the Treo in my pocket, I’m just getting used to having such a small and light device in my hand. Cool. I feel like Zoolander.
