The Bynum General store… is this the one that the local NPR station did a piece on recently? I think it was about how the town is dying and they are trying to revive it by having live music at a general store.
I didn’t hear the NPR piece, but that’s probably it. I wonder if it’s online–what show was it on?
Bynum isn’t really dying. It’s an “in” place to live right now. It’s an interesting place–used to be a mill town, and now it’s a combination of people who’ve lived there forever and artsy/intellectual people. And Clyde Jones.
Knowed Out, I’ll be there! I’m there almost every Friday.
How to get there:
From the 54 bypass around Chapel Hill, take 15/501 south. Go past Fearrington village. Bynum Road is just past Allen and Sons on the left (about 5 miles after Fearrington), so you can stop for some barbecue (don’t forget the hush puppies!) on your way there! Go left on Bynum Road, and the General Store is down the road on the left. You can park on the road or in the field.
I can’t make it, but I’m bumping to give some other folks a chance to see this. We’ve tried several times to do a Triangle get-together, but it never seems to work out.
If anyone’s coming Friday night, look for me! (Not a very good picture, but that’s all I have.) I’ll be wearing a tan “Bynum General Store” t-shirt with a Clyde Jones butterfly on the back. If you can’t make it this Friday, I’m there almost every Friday, so email me and let me know you’re coming!
If you can’t find me, go in the store, get a bottle of IBC root beer or a moon pie, and when you go to pay, tell Jerry, the good-looking guy behind the register (he owns the store) that you’re looking for Melanie. You get extra points if you make up a weird story about how you know me, but you don’t know what I look like. I usually hang out in front of the store, around the merch table. I’m good friends with Molly, the gorgeous and brilliant woman who does the announcements during the show, so just look for her, and I’ll probably be close by.
Edsel 500 is playing this Friday. I’ve never heard them before, but it sounds like it should be a fun show. It might rain on Friday, so it could be an inside show–it’s better when the weather’s nice and the show’s outside.
We’re even more strapped than usual at the moment, so Skulldigger and I will have to take a bye on this one. We’ll probably be available and with funds to join in the fun in late May or early June, though.
Don’t let that stop you–you can come even if you don’t have money. It’s by donation, and I can throw a couple of extra bucks in the hat for you! Whadda ya say? I’ll even buy you some Necco wafers!
Edsel 500 is a lot of fun–if you ever get a chance to see them, go for it! They play 50s-style rock–a combination of swing, rockabilly, Elvis, Louis Jordan, and lots more.
Next week, it’s Original Red Clay Rambler Bill Hicks and his wife Libby.
If anyone’s interested in getting on the email list for weekly updates, email me.
