My opinion is that I don’t care what obscure acronyms you choose to use when you’re talking amongst yourselves but on a public message board list this, it’s important to make clear what you mean. In other words, I’m with @What_Exit on this one.
I don’t really agree. Yes, ideally people wouldn’t use unknown acronyms. But the thing is, someone who uses an acronym clearly thinks it isn’t unknown. Or they wouldn’t use it. So advice not to use unknown acronyms isn’t very useful.
People often use words they assume others know. And sometimes they’re wrong. Someone earlier didn’t know what the word “trock” meant. So they just asked. And they got an answer. I think that worked better.
Honestly, @k9bfriender said the three-letter acronym would be clear to those they were talking to, but this is a public forum, not a private conversation. Excluding others is pretty rude.
We never had a TLA one. But you should have seen how confused I was when I first joined the board and people kept mentioning SMG. (typically talking about Sarah Michelle Gellar and not a Submachine Gun)
You know it is funny, even in threads talking about the military or the Navy I usually explain the acronym the first time I use it. For instance, I failed to take to heart NAVY. Never Again Volunteer Yourself.
