Liars who give false or misleading information about themselves on the internet describes…oh, 99% of the human population, of which a smaller percentage do so to incite reactions and are trolls.
There have been a few mentions here of those two bizarre “thought experiment” threads currently haunting FQ, the one-way measurement of the speed of light and the retro-reflectors on the moon, both authored by the same oddball creature named sbright33, so I had a quick look.
I don’t think sbright is a troll, but I think it’s sufficiently troll-adjacent that it’s worth a mention. Apparently sbright commands a team of research physicists, every one of them with a doctorate from MIT (wouldn’t a bit of scientific diversity be a good thing? 
) yet somehow feels the need to come to the SDMB to validate his “thought experiments”, which incidentally are completely pointless, in my view.
When asked why he didn’t just consult his own brilliant team of physicists about this stuff – which is obviously because it doesn’t exist – he replied, and I quote:
Yes, we have discussed it for hours recently. 100’s of hours, over the years. Some of these guys are too smart for me. They talk about the ether, which has not been proven.
Two things jump out at me here. One is the crack about “some of these guys are too smart for me”. The whole point of these threads, well exemplified by the various bits of running commentary and side remarks by this poster, is to demonstrate how incredibly smart he is. They fail to do this – they actually demonstrate nothing more than juvenile nerdiness – but the former is the intent. Thus the faux-modesty that his brilliant but entirely imaginary team of MIT physicists is smarter than he is is in fact a form of sea-lioning – invariably polite, invariably self-deprecating.
And you gotta love the last sentence in that quote! Yes, whenever leading physicists with PhDs from MIT discuss the speed of light, the luminiferous aether always comes up! 
My first guess would have been that this is a geeky high school student, but from his join date I’m guessing they’re probably older than that. Still, that’s the basic profile – someone wasting everyone’s time for their own entertainment, and pushing back defensively when asked why he’s asking pointless questions about things that cannot happen in the real world.
