Trolls R Us Resurrections

I thought it was me for using MPSIMS as my personal Live Journal.

Nobody out-pizzas the Hut!

Once you get into hutting, it becomes an obsession. I used to do it 7 or 8 times a day, left me really sore. Ended up in rehab.

This is exactly why I wonder if there’s some sort of bug where sometimes the most likely word gets bumped up so far it wraps around. So, like it’s 99.99% the likely word, and then something adds .02% and it becomes 0.01% likely.

Or possibly, since it’s Microsoft’s spellcheck, it doesn’t offer words that it would normally autocorrect. However, Chrome doesn’t implement autocorrection.

Either way, it’s not working as it should, and both Chrome’s old spellcheck and the one Google uses for Gboard (the keyboard on Android phones) didn’t have this bug.

You’re much more patient than I am. My ignore list comprises 49 accounts, some of whom have been banned, and one of those of course being TOWP. Up until a few years ago (speaking of my history on social media in general, not just my much more limited time on this forum) I used to never put people on ignore. But now? I find my social media experience has very much improved by not having to scroll through so many disingenuous double-takes, vitriolic screeds, and varying degrees of thinly-veiled racist manifestos (and so not having to resist, anymore, the urge to tell them why they’re wrong, over and over and over again). It’s like being free of a burden that I might otherwise have to carry with me wherever I go (or at least anywhere that happens to have internet access, which is almost literally everywhere nowadays).

Not all of the people I have on ignore are bad people (ie: not all of them are racists), but they are all the sort of person I, one way or another, have no interest in conversing with and who seem so hopelessly committed to their ways that my trying to dissuade them, as a stranger on the internet, is so unlikely to be successful as be not worth the undertaking. I leave that to their friends and loved ones.

It takes a lot for me to ignore someone. I only do it if I find it really hard to respond to someone in a civil manner. It’s as much to protect me from violating rules as anything.

There are plenty of posters I don’t care for, and others I don’t dislike but argue with due to differences of opinion. I can get by just fine with them. But there are some people who toe the line perfectly and troll away without sanction.

My list is really small and I’ll share it, since this is the Pit. Aside from TOWP, I also have:

Magiver
ZosterSandstorm

DrDeth was on the list, but he changed a bit. People called him out on some of his stuff and he said he’d try to do better, and I think he has. I still disagree with him a lot but he doesn’t poke and poke and poke like he used to.

I had other people I ignored but they were banned, I can’t even remember who they were anymore. (Which is the ideal situation!)

What are you talking about? You make great contributions to the board! Why just today I read…

No, it wasn’t you. Silly. Think of a long term, zero content poster that if, shall we say, was flayed out as the centerpiece of a tentacle-based sashimi dish, would be immediately recognizable.

@Dandan - AFAIK, no, they get no notifications. I only have 2 posters on indefinite ban right now though, and several of my short-timers are gone - as I said, they are often about to self-destruct or be revealed in all their Trockishness.

Or, as @BigT notes, a poster has climbed up on a hobby horse or picked a weird hill to die on, and you just need to put them in time-out for a while.

You may get further with these kinds of discussion if you use the recognized terms.

“Ban” is only something that moderators can do, and it bans the person from the whole board. They are, I believe, notified about that. There are also temporary suspensions, which again is from the whole board. There are topic bans, which bans the poster from posting about a particular topic anywhere on the board, and thread bans, which ban the poster from posting in a particular thread. There may even be thread topic bans, which would ban a poster from posting about a particular topic but only in a particular thread (not sure if I’ve seen one of those). These actions are all done only by moderators.

What you are talking about are “ignores” done by an individual poster about another individual poster, so that the ignorer does not see the text of the ignored poster’s posts (unless they are replied to or otherwise copied into another post); the ignorer still does see that posts and threads from the ignored exist. And no, the ignored one is not automatically notified about that. Ignoring is primarily for the ignorer’s own benefit, as you can see from various responses above.

Sorry that this makes nonsense out of your “ban-ned wagon” joke. “Ignored wagon” just doesn’t have the same appeal, does it?

I don’t know…is the wagon the one I’m supposed to be on?

Jeeze, one little terminology error…well, we’ll call it a win/win, ignore-amus fought, and you got in two big paragraphs of detailed correction; sorry I used the wrong word, and I swear the “banned-wagon” silliness didn’t occur to me until I was so far in I couldn’t pull out.

I really was hoping that someone would comment on my thought about the pokers and the poked being symbiotic; it annoys the hell out of me when a perfectly interesting thread bogs down with a troll reiterating his position, over and over, with the rational opposition continuing it’s futile and unproductive assaults.

Dan

Yeah, sorry about that, it got away from me. It was just very jarring to read “bans” so far out of context.

Is hutting like cottaging, only in less developed places?

Hutters aspire one day to be burninated by Trogdor.

Thank you, and nevermind - at least we aren’t trollishly poking back and forth at each other.

Dan

I think the Hutters are safe during the day.

And the Trogdor comes in the night!

74westy was never on my radar as being a shithead, but after repeatedly lying about me in the “Canadian ‘dopers, Freedom Convoy?” thread in P&E, they’re on my ignore list now. That list has doubled in the last few days.

It’s one thing to mistakenly assume something about what a person said, but to insist on it after an explanation, you’re just being an asshole.

74westy asked me not to call them a liar. Well, you’re a fucking liar.

Huh, 74westy never twigged me for anything but a side commentator, not really contributing anything really useful, but not offensive either, but they really decided to dig in on their “misunderstanding”.

Not sure what was up with that.

I even sincerely asked to please retract it and I’d just drop it, whatever, no big deal. Nope.

I mean, what the hell, did I somehow get a reputation as someone trying to advocate for anti-vaxxers? :confounded:

Made sense to me, the only claim you made was that the initial participants of the convoy were primarily Canadian.

That may or may not be the case (I don’t know for sure but I think so), but that wasn’t what was being challenged.
