Lately, sporadically, I have had trouble checking my email on Yahoo, and playing games on Yahoo games.
When in my email account, sometimes every other page load attempt will fail, giving me a 404. Most annoying is when I try to compose an email, and the page loads OK, and I start typing the email getting through the address subject and half the text when the page disappears and gets replaced with a 404! (It has always done something wierd–the cursor leaves the text window in which I am typing and resets to the address line. But lately the whole page has just started dissappearing.)
On Yahoo games, lately, it has become difficult to load the applets, and even when they are successfully loaded it fails to load the room info, giving me an error message stating that “either” I’m on a firewall, I’m not connected, the server is down, or I have a stale cache page.
I don’t think any of these is the problem except possibly the third, since the symptoms of the problem only occur sporadically. Sometimes I can surf Yahoo stuff with no problem, and sometimes I can’t.
But has anyone else been having problems with Yahoo lately?
There is one thing I am afraid this might be related to.
My machine’s available RAM is steadily shrinking. I’ve wiped it clean of spy ware and stuff like that, and it continues to shrink. I have no suspicious processes or applications running, and still, it continues to shrink.
I have a total of 256MB RAM. Two weeks ago my available amount was 80MB. Right now the available amount is 25MB.
Strangely, I have seen no performance degradation as a result of this. But the numbers are there…
What could this be and could it be related to my Yahoo problems?
By the way, I note that my “Page File Usage” is 210 MB. I haven’t been watching that very closely, but I have an impression that this is higher than it used to be.
But I don’t know what “page file usage” actually means. What does it mean, and could it be related to my shrinking RAM availability?
I used to have SBC DSL who is now affilliated with yahoo somehow. If you are an SBC Yahoo subscriber I used to have many problems with my enternet300 they software they provide and this could be the culprit if it was anything like mine.
I am not an expert on these types of software, YMMV.
I got this problem all teh time after switching providers to NTL. I think basically the problem was proxy-related for me. I couldn’t check my hotmail either. I had to switch to a different ntl proxy. I don’t remember the ins and outs of it but if you are using ntl you might find the forums at this site very useful:
Im using PeoplePC Accelerated (I assume all 5 times Dialup programs are the exact same program under a cosmetic cover) and I have had more 404s recently (within the past week) as well. I think that the program or the browsers themselves are cacheing pages, and that may clash with surfing some sites… Perhaps only sites we have visited alot, with old copy and new revisions getting mixed together in the shuffle, or the opposite – no space to store the new downloaded sites that dont already reside on the hard drive. In any case, I am going to clean out my cache and history and the like. If you do not need the items contained therein, doing this could help you as well, find it in internet options, I beleive you can get to it in control pannel (Windows) as well.
