Truck Enthusiasts...The 2012 Ford Super Chief

OK, I realize this is not a production car, but damn! Look at the pictures in the link…that’s some pretty amazing work! Hopefully Ford will incorporate some of these ideas in future vehicles.

I realize a lot of you are going to think its ugly, or have a “that’s not a real truck” opinion…but it is hydrogen powered, has a really cool mix of retro and high tech interior, beautiful wood paneling, a beautiful-looking engine and what I think is beautiful styling.

Whaddya think?

Meh. Looks like it’s trying to be a Dodge Magnum with the cargo roof removed.

Put its technology in the Raptor.

That’s what I thought too (about the Magnum), but I don’t think it’s too similar to the Raptor. The Raptor is a real offroading machine, the Super Chief is a cruiser. Different interiors, engines, suspensions, etc.

I did a little more digging and found this: Ford Super Chief sips three fuels - Autoblog which has more info on the engine. Apparently its designed to run on E85, gasoline OR hydrogen. So I guess you have 3 fuels to choose from. There’s a couple more different pics of the Chief in there too.

I think its pretty badass, if impractical as a functional “truck”.

That isn’t a truck, it’s a luxury vehicle with a small bed.

Please remember that this is a"concept" vehicle. The design is to get an idea how people will feel about design concepts on future trucks. I must say thought that the shifter looks capable of flight all on its own.

The backseats look comfortable, but I prefer off road machines.

WTF is it with these massively-ugly grilles they’re putting on thrucks these days?

The first sentence of my OP “I realize this isn’t a production car” pretty much indicates that I’m aware of that fact.

It all depends on what you want. Escalades are certainly off-road capable, but hardly any owner of a vehicle like that uses it for such.

I think I read somewhere that initial pricetags for this thing are a cool $250,000.

It doesn’t make it any less cool or outrageous looking to me. I’d buy one if I were Jay Leno, and then I’d put a tank engine in it.

I vote awesome.

That was my first reaction as well. And I don’t care for the high-beltline and chopped look at all. Screws up the proportion something fierce - that side view looks like someone squeezed the top half only of the photo by about 50%.

That fat tailgate is ridiculous - is there a hydrogen tank in there or is it a foot thick “just because”?

Zero rear-view visibility if both of those video screens are down.

The flat floor is nice, at least.

Super Chief = ugly, bloated, ostentateous, filled with useless cosmetic crap, I hate it, then again, I hate all luxury vehicles, this is nothing more than a 4WD La-Z-Boy

Raptor = WANT!! THIS is what a proper truck should be, overbuilt, rugged, built to take abuse, and shrug it off, laughing, asking for more, no useless cosmetic crap, purely functional

And I’m not a Ford guy either…

I would have no interest in getting either the Raptor or the Super Chief. I realize the Super Chief is a concept vehicle designed to show what is possible. As is so often the case, just because we can do a thing it does not follow that we should do that thing. Mactech said it best.

At best, it’s just a rolling masturbatory aid.

As for the Raptor, it’s better but still fails in the real world. Trucks should be utilitarian vehicles designed for day-to-day practicality. This thing is over built, over styled and over priced to be used for anything resembling actual work. It’s a fashion accessory intended to make men feel better about themselves, nothing more.

How much of discount do I get for all the ugly? I do like the suicide doors, but that wood interior is a non-starter.

Don’t like the styling that much. The wood on the steering wheel is particularly ugly.

It looks like the little brother of the Landmaster from Damnation Alley.

On the other hand, an actual 4WD La-Z-Boy would be awesome!

Someone came close to that last year.

Looks like a reimagining of the International CXT, though I don’t think the Super Chief can tow 20 tons.
