Was he black eyed in that scene? I remember him dancing, but have to wonder if he was just having a good time (caught up in the moment) and not actually under the spell.
Wrong character. Sookie and Jason have fairie blood. Andy and Terry (and Andy’s yet to be seen sister) are related to Bill, but that doesn’t make them sups.
Terry was very much black-eyed and rutting away with Arlene. I would say not immune.
I was sure someone said there was something special about Andy. If he’s normal, then we need an explanation for why Maryann’s mojo doesn’t affect him. Is it because he shows up after the party is well under way? That’d be lame.
Andy did go under her spell once before.
I’m not entirely sure at this point if anyone was black eyed in that scene - I think the “black eyed possession” became more pronounced/was revealed later.
Having said that, his aversion/comments about his dancing suggests (strongly, to me) that more than just alchohol fueled his getting caught up in it.
I felt exactly the same way about the maenad plot line in the book as well.
I’m also glad we get to put the “minotaur” meme to rest in these threads. I know the series doesn’t always follow the book, but I was not getting minotaur out of the Mary Ann thing, at all. While I really don’t think that Daphne’s explanation of a maenad was terribly accurate, especially with respect to the ways in which Mary Ann asserts her power, at least we can stop calling her a minotaur. My next comment is in a spoiler box, although I really don’t think it’s a spoiler. I just don’t want to ruin it for anyone who doesn’t care to read the books.
The books explain that the maenad, which was an acolyte of Dionysus, feeds off the power of lust and drunkenness. All the parties and orgies are merely a mechanism for her to control the people of Bon Temps. The idea is to have a ritual involving drunken orgy, and that gives Mary Ann the power to send her energy out to all of them which allows her to control them. This sets up the gang to make a sacrifice to Dionysus, which is why Mary Ann wanted to lop off Sam’s head. This is Mary Ann’s purpose: to feed off people’s lusty (lust for drink, drugs, sex, debauchery in general) inclinations to serve the actual diety, Dionysus, who was the God of Partying. Basically.
Yeah, I see what you’re saying. I guess it would be more accurate to say she becomes a kind of avatar of Dionysus or something?
The maenad plot in the books was just beyond stupid (and boring. Except for Eric doing himself up as a gay swinger - that was amusing), so I think the show has improved on it slightly. But it would have been more fun, I think, if they’d drawn on the plot of The Bacchae more, or at least given the audience more information about her identity and motivations up front.
I agree. I wasn’t a fan of it, either. At first, I thought it might be interesting, but it turned out to be a complete non-sequitor. Plus, there seemed to be enough going on in the book to begin with (vampires, murders, shapeshifters) that the introduction of yet another thread of plot was just unnecessary.
Well, yes, when she puts on the Dionysus helmet thingy. I followed the Wiki link upthread and Dionysus’s avatar was a bull, so it seems Mary Ann is representing that in some way with the horn helmet.
There’s a band name in there somewhere, I’m just not sure exactly where.
Depending on how Maryann’s story plays out, there might be some character growth, but more likely regression. If Maryann leaves, Eggs will go with her (assuming he survives), and Tara will be insecure and untrusting again. Sam will be less likely to come out to anyone. If Andy has a hand in Maryann leaving, he might get his job back, and some self-respect.
That story line hasn’t accomplished much. We could have used more of the church, more of the outside world adapting to the supernaturals, and we definitely could have used more of Godric and Lafayette.
In the books, the vamps + Sookie returned from Dallas just in time to, um, be involved with the resolution of the Maryann storyline. That seemed like a plot device to tie the maenad in to the Sookie/Vamps storyline, so there’s no telling what HBO will do with it.
Spoilered because it appears HBO may be heading in sort of the same direction with Eggs & Mary Ann squatting in Sookie’s house. My spoiler was intentionally pretty damn vague.
I really couldn’t figure that out when reading book. At first I thought he did survive the climax of the story, then a couple paragraphs later got the sense that he didn’t, and never figured out if he lived or died - so I guess I’ll be as suprised as people who haven’t read the book. It’s one of the reasons book 2 is my least favorite. That said, this season is pretty good because it’s not a faithful adaptation of a week book.
Any clue from the books how Bill survived all those years without drinking human blood? Did he drink rat blood, or what?
I haven’t read the books, but I wondered about that too. Is it a clue that Bill said something about not wanting to shed any more “innocent” blood? Maybe he only fed from evil people.
Or maybe he just glamored folks and sucked enough to get by, without killing anyone.
I just read on CNN that Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer (Bill) are engaged.
