True Blood: "I Smell a Rat" 8/22/10 (open spoilers)

“I’m a fairy? That’s fucking lame.”

I thought that was an inspired way to do that reveal. I kept wondering how they could tell the audience that Sookie was a fairy…excuse me, faerie, without sounding lame. Acknowledging the lameness right up front was perfect.

This was an episode of confession and revelation. Jason sees that Crystal is a werepanther. Jesus is revealed to be a shaman. Jason spills the beans to both Sookie and Tara about shooting Eggs. Arlene tells Terry she’s carrying Renee’s baby. That was a good bit of acting by whever plays Terry (I don’t know his name). He showed the smallest flash of rage and hurt on his face before turning it back to kindness and resolve. I couldn’t believe she still wanted to get rid of the baby after that (though how it wouldn’t still be an abortion is beyond me). Terry is way better than she deserves.

Russell is obviously completely off his rocker. I wonder if Zoloft works on vampires.

I kind of liked seeing Jason tell Bill to fuck off back out of his house after Bill tried to get bitchy with him.

Only two episodes left in the season. We had a slow start this year, but the second half has given us some of th best episodes of he series.

ETA I almost forgot. I loved the absent minded bitchslap Hoyt gave to Tommy while walking past him, and Jessica flinging him like a ragdoll into the woods.

I thought this was a pretty weak episode.

So, Sookie learns she’s a fairy, but never asks:

  • What the hell does it mean to be a fairy?
  • Is Jason also a fairy?
  • Where the hell is fairyland, and how does she get there?

This is worse than “Lost” in that respect.

Best line: “That’s some new kinda trash.”

Speaking of trash, did anyone watch “Swamp People” on The History Channel? You can tell from the graphics that their trying to ride some of the “True Blood” train, even if they don’t actually have any vampires.

So far, I am liking this season. The writers are cramming a whole lot in, and the plot is moving fast, almost too fast for some of the characters and not enough time for good character development

I loved the (brief) return of the preacher. I love Russell and can’t wait to see the destruction he brings. Hoyt and Jessica will hopefully get back together. Maybe he can get a silver infused condom. Yeah for Eric being evil and holding Sookie hostage.

As for criticisms:

I am not really liking Crystal all that much, they haven’t given her enough depth. The books took it a little slower, exploring Hotshot and its citizens, then introducing Crystal. It may have worked better that way, but in the interest of time, they get right to Crystal/Jason.

Sam’s backstory didn’t really move me. Boo-hoo, he got taken advantage of, it seemed like a flashback from *Lost *with Sawyer. I guess we know where he got the money to open Merlotte’s. I also think it’s a little late in his character’s development to bring in such a major revelation about his abhorrence of violence.

Did they bring in the new waitress just to cast a spell on Arlene’s baby?

Them fuckers is a whole new dimension of trash.
There episode was full of great lines.

If Tara thought her life was crumbling around her last week, she must be on the verge of suicidal now.

Yeah, my bad. That sounds a lot more like Lafayette!

As soon as Jason told her, I was like “Tara is going to snap”.

I wouldn’t want to be the actress though. She has been crying all season.

The only think I really, really didn’t like was the Jesus and Layfayette V-trip. It just dragged and was boring and pointless.

The rest was fun. Lots of great reveals and finally we can dispense with the spoiler tags from the books now that we know about panthers and fairies.

I can’t wait for the Eric and Russell showdown but it may be a long wait until it is resolved.

I started wondering if she was hired because she so good at making her lip quiver like that. She’s been doing it a lot.

I had a :smack: moment last night with the burning-whatever on Jessica’s lawn. My first thought was "The KKK would never do that to a vampire- they’re Sandpeople, not stormtroopers. (When the KKK has gone after bigger fish it was usually unexpected and usually doesn’t end well for them- Hayes Ponda prime example of both.)

Then it occurred- it’s not the KKK it’s the Fellowship or their supporters, though obviously with a nod to the Klan. Did anybody notice what shape or letter it was they were burning?

Whoever played the Talbot-substitute hustler did a good job. “Uh yeah… it was a nice house… that I made” with his WTF? expression. The only problem I had with it was that after that attack Russell would be the most famous “person” on Earth- Osama bin Laden times 101; even a drugged up hustler would have to recognize this crazy short middle aged seeming vampire with the southern accent as the one everybody on Earth is looking for after the attack.

In real life Moyers and Paquin married this weekend. I hope this doesn’t cut down on her scenes with Eric. I loved Pam’s “blah blah vampire stuff blah” and her comment on his farm on the Scandinavian island (can’t remember the name): “I don’t want that windy shithole!”

Jesus is too new a character and it’s too near the end of the season for you to much care about his past or where he came from; I thought Lafayette’s voodoo ancestor was interesting and wish they’d shown some of his childhood or supe-moments from his past. I don’t think we’ve ever heard anything about his father, for instance.

Some back story on Lafayette would have been interesting had it not been told through a bad 1970’s PSA on how LSD is bad.

It bugged me so much during the first season that I know that guy feeling that I actually IMDB-ed him and Lo, he was a Keanu Reeves like stoner character in Gilmore Girls ! The boy’s grown up - I was impress that the director ghave time to his expressions, you could see the struggle inside him.
BTW can someone just reassure me that Tara scuffing some earth over the bloblike remains of Franklin won’t undo the true death …

Saw that in the paper today. When they start making little Vampire/Fairy babies, I hope it can be worked into the script!

It’s the Vampire-Fairy babies that suffer the most: not only do they not really fit in with either world, but they’re always eating themselves.

It won’t. But does anyone care that Franklin’s dead? I’ve lost track of the alliances.

If anyone cares I’d think it would be Russel, he was living in his mansion and I assume in on Russel’s plan for taking over the world. Which might put Jason and Tara in his sights now along with Sookie and Bill. But I think he’s got other problems to worry about. In fact, can someone refresh me on the point of the Tara/Franklin subplot?

Russell sent Franklin to Bob Temps to find out everything he could about Sookie. He scared some information out of Jessica. Then he glamored stuff out of Tara. Then he became obsessed with Tara so he brought her along to Russell’s when he went there to debrief Russell about Sookie.

Speaking of alliances and allegiances, Bill doesn’t have to do what Eric says anymore, right? Or is Eric still the sheriff? Is there anybody in charge in Louisiana right now?

Ahhhh, I remember now. In that case he was probably little more then a scout for Russel, so I doubt anyone will care that he’s gone.
Next question, how did Russel find out about Sookie in the first place. Was it from Sophie-Ann? Come to think of it, how to Sophie-Ann learn of Sookie, wait, that can’t be it, I think Bill and Eric asked Sophie Ann why Russell was so interested in her…I’m confused.

Isn’t Eric still in charge? I know he renounced LA, but I thought that was all for show. To give Russell the impression that he was coming to Mississippi. I thought he was pretending to go to Russell’s side as a way to protect Sookie.

But he swore his allegiance to Russel in front of Sophie Ann…who may or may not be dead at this point. Did he stash her somewhere or just kill everybody in the mansion? Since she was going to marry Russel, I’m not sure that it matters that Eric made a big show of renouncing her. I should probably stop worrying about it.
