Trump and Harris agree to September 10th ABC debate - Watch Along Starts at Post 431

Trump is engaging in wishful covfefe. You can waste time analyzing nothing, but perhaps it was a message to those who essentially only get their news directly from Trump. So when only one debate happens Trump can claim courage and morality, or his equivalent of those things.

It’d be great if she could work the word “weird” into her oratory. I’ve used the word a couple times when someone starts talking politics and MAGAts really overreact to it.

I think the “weird” thing is going to get old fairly quickly and should be voluntarily retired by Democrats right now. We need a new adjective every week for the abnormalities of the Trump campaign. Walz and his thesaurus should be featured in a weekly YouTube video ceremoniously announcing the word of the week.

Agreed. Say why they’re weird. Give context and why the Dems are not weird. Don’t put all of the burden on one word, or else we’ll rub the shine off of it. Remember, we want to teach low-info people.

Yes, also agreed - I said as much in a different thread. We don’t want it to turn into a smug, meaningless catchphrase. They need to deploy it as a descriptor of actual things Trump/Vance and the GOP are saying, doing, and proposing. That’s how it will resonate with people and continue to diminish the GOP ticket.

It’s weird that Donald continues to obsess about crowd sizes
It’s weird that Vance accuses Dems of name-calling.
It’s weird that they say crime is up when in fact crime is down.
It’s weird that they think Walz retired right before his unit was deployed.
It’s weird that they think foreign immigrants are illegally voting.
It’s weird that Vance used to think that Trump was a cynical a-hole.
It’s weird that they think the 1/6 rioters are patriots.

Etc.

This. Almost certainly.

Harris should refuse – and I gather is refusing – to commit to any other debates until after September 10. If she wants to negotiate more after that, go ahead.

I think her doing the 10th is a really good idea. It may be the only way to get his followers to actually see what she’s saying. Most of them are irremediably stuck in their sunk cost and still won’t hear it; but there are people out there thinking ‘sure Trump’s awful but Harris will be worse’ because they’re never seeing anything actually from Harris (or other Democrats), they’re only seeing the MAGA news sources. But some of them will most likely watch this because of what they’ll be expecting to see.

The word weird is a winner. Say why, as said. Make it funny (in a way that is gentle and understated^). No reason to change it at this point.

^Canadian strategy may not be valid in the United Stares.

As of right now, we don’t even have to explain it. Just their reaction to being called weird is weird enough. I did like Trump saying “I’m not weird, it’s actually the left that’s weird” and “they’re not calling me weird, they’re saying that about JD” and JD having to agree with it.

On Seth Meyers’ A Closer Look last night, he asked democrats to give examples/cites when calling the republicans ‘weird’ (cued up, but this clip also contains video of the paraphrased Trump/Vance quotes above.

Seth also had clips of the times when he called Trump weird in the past few years (and Seth looked so young in some of them). The Democrats should owe Seth a finder’s fee.

That link is cued up to exactly that.

I’d go with this scene from Billy Madison, when the titular character spewed a bunch of nonsense in a debate.

Not entirely. If 2% develop a little seed of doubt and juat don’t get around to voting, thats huge.

I think Democrats need to use it sparingly. Wait until the Republicans do something weird, like accusing Jill Biden of having an affair with Bob the Cap Catcher, then just post it on social media with “#weird”.

I don’t think we’ll be waiting long.

Say what? Is this something I missed that really happened (the accusation), Who is Bob the cap catcher?

The whole helicopter with Willie Brown things was pretty weird. Jon Stewart had a fun time with that last night. Paraphrase: “It might not mean much to you right now, but before we die there’s something I need to tell you about the SF District Attorney. She’s horrible.”

That accusation has not actually been made, as far as I’m aware. I made it up as an example of some possible weirdness we could be subjected to in the near future. It took me several minutes to think of something weirder than what they’ve actually done.

Bob the Cap Catcher is a nickname given to someone who had his fifteen seconds of fame at the Olympics. One of the swimming heats was delayed because a previous competitor had lost their swim cap and it was at the bottom of the pool. Apparently you can’t start a race with a cap there, someone came out in a swimsuit, dove in, swam down, and retrieved it. He was a perfectly normal, average male, but compared to the physical specimens that compete in Olympic swimming, it was rather comical. I’m sure the video is online.

So, to reiterate and end the hijack, don’t overuse “weird”. Wait for them to say something weird, then use it as a rejoinder.

Hmm, I sort of zoned out on the Olympics this time after the opening ceremonies. I read a few things, but didn’t watch much. I do like that bit of “weirdness” you came up with. And you know? It would not surprise me in the least if that very thing happened. They really are just that weird.

That was hilarious! In case we die, I need to tell you this. I liked Nate Holden’ comment: “I guess we all look alike.”

That was a town hall type debate. A stage debate would kill that.

On the other hand, I bet Harris and the Dems have had 8 years to strategize his to handle it. I think it was such a curveball before Clinton didn’t want to dulisrupt her arguments. I would expect Harris to call it out with some pointed description of him skulking around, acting creepy and weird.

That’s a pretty good strategy. Don’t look surprised by Trump, point out that he never had much substance or truth.

“Once again Trump is spouting his usual gibberish. Here’s what my campaign is about.”

“That was even more incoherent than usual. The Harris-Walz administration is going to…”

“Mr. Trump, you can spread your usual lies, but America is being tired of them. My agenda will address homelessness by…”

Great advice.

Part of Trump’s supposed success was the lack of any effort by the moderators to real time fact check him. They left it to the candidates to address each other’s answers. Harris should be prepared for that situation. I think the above straregy of not getting into the weeds but just generally cashing him out for lies, or stating the truth and moving on would work a well as anything is going to.

She needs to be mostly serious but positive to appear presidential. If she breaks it a laugh, it needs to be natural.

I’ve heard one of Clinton’s problems was focus groups commented about minor things like her voice was “shrill”, so she made efforts to deepen her voice and such. Then she came off inauthentic. Harris needs to be authentic.
