Trump and Harris agree to September 10th ABC debate - Watch Along Starts at Post 431

Hey, “The Puppy Who Lost His Way” was an inspirational story!

Harris says she’s open to the September 25 debate Trump “agreed” to, but he has to show up on the 10th first.

This is the correct approach, IMO. His Fox News proposal is a non-starter and his grandstanding should not be rewarded.

A world where Trump can’t just declare something to be true is going to take some getting used to. I think I need a few minutes …

This was swiftboating. Along with “I can’t stand her laugh.” My father would repeat both of these ad nauseum. Then again, 4 years later he would say stuff like “how many people are going to close the voting booth curtain and decide they can’t vote for a nggr.”

Me, moral high ground, “Dad you’re gonna let something some other dumbass thinks in the voting booth influence your vote?”

But I digress. The Republicans are trotting out the greatest hits playbook of the past 40 years, including trying to swiftboat Walz, and it’s the same guy that orchestrated the original swiftboat hit on Kerry! What worked pre-social media seems to be falling flat in the tic tok era. Thankfully.

As I wrote before, Harris should channel Ronny the great communicator, with “there you go again Donald”… (You can fast forward to about 45 seconds to hear the line)

Kamala Harris got a blow job and Tim Walz was born in Kenya?

Probably makes as much sense as anything they’re saying.

This amazes you? 21st-century Americans have the attention span of a…

Looks like the debate is back to “iffy” again, according to Trump: Donald Trump threatens to pull out of 10 September presidential debate | Donald Trump | The Guardian

Fine. If the Orange Menace fails to show, Harris will be there without him.

If the article is accurate, I do think the Harris campaign is making a mistake in insisting that the mics be on at all times, especially if muted mics were already agreed to, as they were in the first debate with Biden. It’s not only bucking what’s becoming a standard protocol, but it would allow Trump to talk over her all the time, which is more or less his specialty. I much enjoyed seeing, during the Biden debate, Trump’s mouth flapping but no sound coming out!

Agreed that once they figure out Harris is going to show up on ABC with or without him, they’re going to change their minds pretty quick.

They should have negotiated more leverage beforehand than “anytime, any place”.

Somehow both campaigns must have come to the conclusion that having him interrupt all the time would be a liability to Trump rather than a strength

I believe Trump knows the debate will not go well for him. Harris is smart and a former prosecutor. She should do very well against the likes of Trump.

But, Trump does not want to appear weak or give Harris 90 minutes of free air time where he cannot respond. So, Trump tries to dance around not showing up in the hopes Harris will agree to terms that are better for Trump (e.g. have Fox host it).

I hope Harris tells him to go pound sand. She’ll show at the agree place and time.

I think the whole idea of the upcoming debates was to cause the stalling of his court dates, and that has gone about as far as it can go. Since the actual reason for the debates is gone, so is the need.

Having Fox host it must absolutely be a non-starter. Aside from everything we already know about Fox News, the way they reported on the DNC was absolutely shameful. Harris must insist on any debate being hosted only on a legitimate news network, which means anywhere except Fox, and ABC is as good as any other. She should also emphasize that nothing has changed since Trump agreed to the debate on ABC (well, except for the roaring success of the DNC, capped off by her brilliant speech, which has apparently given Trump the cold shivers).

In his ongoing effort to promote day drinking among his campaign staff, Trump is undercutting them this morning:

If that was an off-the-cuff response, it’s probably one of the more coherent, sane, non-weird things he’s said in the last few years.

Though the lack of pushing back for the sake of pushing back is odd.

When has Trump ever been ‘meh’ about anything?

I’d rather she not respond at all, but just show up at the scheduled time and place. She has no reason to comment or negotiate. Let him twist in the wind.

That makes sense. If she’s asked about it, she can say something like, “He made an agreement. He can decide to back out of his agreement, and if he does, it won’t be the first time. But I believe in living up to my word, so I’ll be there.”

I don’t like the idea of her commenting on or interpreting his behavior, thoughts, or intentions at all. The man (using the term loosely) already takes up too much psychic energy. If she is directly asked, she can say, “I’ll be there.” Period.

100% agreed. I was literally just thinking the same thing.

Let Trump go out there and do his little dance around the issue. He’s scared and it’s very transparent. In my idle moments I like to imagine a trump interview that goes something like this…

Interviewer: "Mr. Trump, will you be appearing at the debate against Vice President Harris in September?

Trump: “Maybe, maybe not? Who knows? You know I like to do this little song and dance routine and make my opponents respond to me. It allows me to control the narrative in the media. Has she said anything about me?”

Interviewer: “No, she has not. She seems to be treating you like you’re the least important thing in the entire universe.”

Trump’s head explodes in a garish orange/red color

Exactly right. Trump gets way too much attention as it is. All Harris has to say is that she made a commitment to September 10, and she’ll be there. It would be cool if she never used the word “Trump” for the rest of the campaign. He’s doing a fine job of sinking his orange self all by himself.
