Trump caved. Now what?

Did Trump pick up new (or reinforce existing) support from people who think the federal government should be shut down? Fringe ultra-libertarians and devout states’-rights fans could be a voting block, y’know!

But he’ll lose a big chunk of them back when the first good-ole-boy Texan goes on tv about the Feds stealing his land.

I figure Trump will build (if he builds anything at all) a “pilot wall” on the land of least resistance, probably on a lot the Federal Government already owns. It’ll have to be rushed to get done before November 2020 so he can get his ribbon-cutting photo-op.

Failing that, it’ll be to reinforce some existing fencing… anything that he can pose in front of.

idk and I don’t think anyone has the stomach to find that out.

It’d be interesting to watch from a distance, like war in Korea.

The base would stand with him. They’re deeply invested in him, not Ann Coulter. I don’t believe, though, that he’d say anything like the above because to say, “Ha! They wouldn’t have lasted a week against Pelosi!” is to say Pelosi is the superior force, a force so powerful, even the Mighty Trump had to cave before her. He’s not going to want to do that.

Trump now says

He also says the odds are "less than 50-50 and that another shut-down “is certainly an option.”

Nor is he likely to consider less than $5.7 billion. “I doubt it. I have to do it right.”

He also doubts whether he’d agree to a pathway to citizenship.

And

IOW, he’s willing to consider an alternative to a wall as long as it’s a wall.

The man is not going to move on. He’s not going to rebound. He’s going to cling to this wall no matter what it costs the GOP in terms of major donors or political capital. Hm.

What’s he going to do? Threaten to go on strike?

I’m a big fan of br’er patches.

Whatever you do, President Trump, just don’t go on strike! I don’t want you to have that wall! If you went on strike, why I’d just be forced to give you that wall!

Just FTR, McConnell caved too. That in itself makes a precedent that will no doubt have future effects too.

As long as he kept on tweeting, nobody would notice the difference. :stuck_out_tongue:

Geez, if only McConnell would go to LIVE in a cave!

Fearless leader of the Never-Trump Republicans has this to say about the “cave”:
Sen. Mitt Romney says Trump called Democrats’ bluff in ending government shutdown

“Trump is Ready to Shut Down Government Again Over Border Wall, Says Chief of Staff”

Romney is like the evil friend at the bar telling his drunken idiot buddy with the broken nose “Hey man , I know you had him, why do you go back finish him off right now?”

And there’s no shortage of caves in Kentucky for him to go live in, either!

Despite a part of this cave being given over to tourism, I expect that with >400 miles of passage, they could find room for him somewhere.

Good Lord, is the Mittster really that dumb, or is he just trying extra-hard to fit in with the Trump crowd?

All of those saying that this will be the time the Republicans stand up to Trump if he tries to shut down the government again or use Emergency Powers?
The “Born Yesterday” queue is right over there.

Any future shutdown would *start *with air traffic controllers and TSA agents walking out, and air travel being at best considerably buggered. That’s when these GOP pols started to notice the pressure this time, when it affected them and their patrons personally.

So “giving in” is now “calling their bluff”?

They can drop Mitch off at the entrance with a bottle of water and a pillow and tell him to keep walking until he gets to the end.
