Why do democrats say this? So if Hillary would have been in office she would have this magical fairy powder that she would have used and made all this covid just go away?
Look around. Covid is in EVERY country (well almost like New Zealand). There is little that could have been done short of martial law.
The post does not say that all deaths would have been avoided, or even a majority. Just a lot could have been avoided if we had gotten serious only a week or two earlier. Like might have happened if we had something like a department to prepare for pandemics. Oh wait, we did have one until…
Nobody is saying that another leader would have “made all this covid just go away”.
This is the strawiest straw man full of straw that I have ever seen strawed on this board. Congratulations!
What Hillary would have done is:
listened to experts
followed advice of experts
used the megaphone of the presidency to encourage safe behaviours, rather than insane conspiracy theories
let actual medical people tell us what to do, rather than promoting quick fix (snake oil) 'miracle cures" like Hydroxychloroquine or bleaching your lungs.
not disbanded the very offices that were designed to help lead us out of a pandemic
The net result would have been… FEWER Americans DYING. As many as 100,000 fewer, by estimates by intelligent people.
But you don’t get this. Or choose not to. Instead, you choose to make up a straw man argument about something nobody said in this thread.
You’re wrong. Trump could have gotten his dipshit base to wear masks. He could have moved weeks earlier. He could have sent masks to every household in the country (which he specifically nixed), he could have stopped lying about the severity and the various imaginary cures, he could have used the Defense Production Act to get enough PPE for the country.
He had done nearly everything wrong, which is why we have a fifth of the world’s deaths and 4% of the world’s population. He failed. He personally killed over a hundred thousand Americans and he’s nowhere near done yet.
And the dipshit Republicans both elected and electorate that support him and ignore the crimes he commits on the daily, have that blood on their hands. They traded a hundred thousand Americans for a few judges and another stolen SCOTUS seat.
You can also simply look at how other countries have done. Canada, a similar country to the US in many respects, has had 28 deaths/100k population. The US has had 71. If we had simply matched Canada, total US deaths would be reduced by around 140,000. Instead, Trump did the worst thing imaginable at every step.
If it weren’t for the Woodward tapes, I’d have pinned this on Trump’s incredible stupidity. But he did in fact know how bad the situation was, so the deaths are due to active malevolence. As far as I’m concerned, it’s mass murder.
removed or seriously curtailed the pandemic identification and management resources;
was slow to react once the pandemic was identified and - when he eventually did - did so too late and in a way that failed to mitigate the problem;
repeatedly lied about the severity of the problem, including telling people it would go away on its own;
rather than coordinating federal resources (and using the stockpile he’d been left), forced states to bid against each other for PPE and other key resources and then diverted medical supplies away from or delayed delivery to blue states whose governors he didn’t like;
repeatedly undermined his medical experts, often while they were standing next to him and in contradiction to what they had just said, and conducted a smear campaign against Dr Fauci for daring to continue to present facts that went against Trump’s preferred narrative;
has and continues to spread misinformation about the pandemic; and
held and participated in multiple superspreader events right up to this week that may have resulted in an addition 200,000 cases and at least 700 deaths.
And that’s not even getting into the vast insensitivity to the people suffering and dying from the disease, vulnerable populations, and the medical staff traumatized by dealing with the vast amounts of death (when he met with nurses in May he got a bit pouty at the suggestion that PPE availability was “sporadic” and…well, have a look at this video of that meeting starting at about 9:50 through to about 11:00 for Trump’s demonstration of empathy).
Since Hillary Clinton, for all her faults, is not an incompetent, narcissistic, corrupt moron, while we would still have had many cases and deaths from COVID, it would have been identified and acted upon sooner using the plans and resources already put in place by the Obama administration and without every action being measured entirely by the metric of whether or not it made her look good or enriched her family. As a result, the US wouldn’t currently be a dramatic outlier on cases per capita, far fewer Americans would have died by this point, and she wouldn’t have been telling people a pandemic hitting new highs every day was over.
ETA: curse all you ninjas. I knew looking for video would slow me down.
Guys, guys. We’ve explained this in clearly and in detail. There is no way @urbanredneck2 could still think Trump wasn’t responsible for at least a hundred thousand American deaths.
I’m sure he’ll be along shortly and feel pretty bad about being wrong. No reason to rub it in.
While I agree that Clinton would have tried to handle COVID logically. But please realize the Republicans still would have controlled the Senate. I can just imagine a Democratic President trying to pass COVID legislation.
I’m pretty sure you’d be in a very similar situation if Hillary was in charge. You would just have had to deal with a couple dozen Senate investigations into how the Clinton administration so poorly handled COVID (even though it probably would have been because of a Republican Senate).
Just trying to throw some reality at the situation.
