Yup just like all the countless other checks and/or balances that seemed pretty solid right up until we elected someone (and a party completely craven and beholden him) who was happy to imperil the whole political system by saying “no I’m not going to do that” regardless of the political consequences (which turned out to be non existent because, as mentioned, his party was completely craven and beholden to, and not willing to put country over party by standing up to him)
Though in fairness to the founding fathers, this particular check has only been around for 80 years or so since the start of the nuclear age (and the 25th amendment even less time)
It’s a goddam shame it’s all we got left. The man has destroyed this country. Not physically (yet) but everything it stood for that I was carefully taught in fifth grade civics class is gone. Pax Americana (such as it was) is gone. The trust in its institutions is gone.
Yeah I’m with you here. I have no hope Trump popping his clogs would improve the domestic political situation. If anything Vance having the chance to lead the months of national mourning and then have a couple of years to engraciate himself with the MAGA base by being more Trump than Trump will be worse for our chances of ever getting out of this burning turd filled dumpster.
But this war is all about Trump and his deluded attempts to leave a “legacy”. Vance would shut it down as soon as he’s able, and not escalate (he’ll talk all Nixonesque and “peace with honor” but will cut whatever deal gets gas prices down)
Another thing…If Vance wanted to launch nukes, he’d be doing it for different reasons that Trump. What those reasons are, I don’t know, but it’s not likely to be because of whatever’s going on in Trump’s brain. However, if enough people were on board to remove Trump from office over his intent to do it, Vance should realize that those same people are still there and may 25A him as well. Though I suppose that would depend, at least in part, on how quickly he could flip the cabinet positions to get remove the people that helped oust Trump and get his own loyalists in there.
Come to think of it, it seems like a safe assumption, given Trump’s state of mind, there’s likely a lot of hand picked Vance loyalists ready to go.
True but I don’t think his state of mind has much to do with it. There is basically zero chance of anyone in this administration invoking the 25th amendment. OTOH looking at those bruises on his hand and the actuary table for the life expectancy of an obese 80 year old with a history of hospitalization for COVID…
We are at a point where we now have to account for how to handle someone taking a shit in the coffee maker, because the CEO of the company keeps doing it. We have no protocols to deal with it because nobody ever anticipated anyone doing that, but now it’s a thing.
We’re pretty much at that point with this country, and yeah, no reasonable person anticipated we’d ever sink this low but we have.
It’s for someone without prior knowledge who feels insecure and wants a simple primer.
