Trump Magically Turns NFL Games Into Anti-Trump Rallies

Thought he was a yam?

So I’m watched Fox for a while to see how they were covering this.

First, I want to note that the crazy right wing cheerleading happens much more strongly during Fox and Friends in the AM and during the evening commentator shows. The afternoon news tends to be more straightforward. And I have to give them props for not over focusing. I saw evenly lengthed segments on Puerto Rico hurricane recovery, the Nashville shooting, the rescue efforts in Mexico City, North Korea and the NFL thing.

One thing I’ve noticed about Fox is they don’t come blasting out of the gate with their unique spin, they start slow and sort of workshop their angle to see how well it sells. They were not ignoring the NFL story and on the surface they were being fairly even-handed. But they did put a lot of weight behind the story of the one player that stood and the fact that he was a veteran of the Afghanistan war. Then they interviewed a fan who said he was against the protests because he was a veteran -although he seemed pretty lukewarm on the issue and wasn’t about to stop watching games. So look for the Fox commentators to spin this as " if you disrespect the national anthem you are disrespecting our veterans." It’s the kind of total false equivalency they are known for.

Trump has miscalculated badly. (Or more realistically: his habitual trust in his “instincts” has led him into serious trouble.)

Trump assumed the team owners would put those defiant blacks in their place–and the glory would redound to Trump. The adulation he’d receive at rallies would put past displays of adoration to shame!

But that didn’t happen.

And the thing is: he won’t let it go. He is going to double down. He will enlist Fox & Friends and The National Enquirer to vilify the players, and scold the owners as being cowards, and threaten boycotts…but it will only convince more players to take the knee and more owners to come out on the field and take the knee with them. (Already the owners of the Rams and of the Chargers, at least, have expressed solidarity with the players.)

Trump will come out of this looking like an ineffectual weakling. It’s his worst nightmare. (Will he try to compensate by ordering the bombing of North Korea? That’s the danger, here.)

This is a fight Trump can win: after all, the last time Trump took on the NFL, he won 3 whole dollars!

How can Trump call on his base to boycott the NFL? What ELSE do they have to bring a glimmer of joy into their putrid lives? Okay, NASCAR. But I can’t see them taking up competitive chess or getting into Renaissance art or learning the cello…

Hey, them Southern boys LOVE their flag. It’s usually the traitor flag, but the LOVE IT!

Wait until he hears about NASCAR’s socialist agenda; Every race, including: organizers, owners, sponsors, teams and drivers run almost exclusively left.

Dude, have you tried to watch NASCAR lately? I was a fan for decades but I walked away when the latest format change happened and I know I wasn’t alone.

I had a cheese and onion enchilada tonight. Seemed to fill my putrid life up just fine.

Enlighten us cycling fans.

Did you remember to take your statins, and opioids?

How many times have we heard this?

Trump’s base eats this shit up. This won’t hurt him just like the other dozen times something like this happened and it didn’t hurt him.

No, because I ran outa japaleno slices…:frowning:

Hope you enjoyed dinner! And I trust you had a nice side of frijoles and rice…a single enchilada makes for a meager meal!

Apparently Trump-haters are not yet tired of constantly being wrong.

Both Richard Childress and <gasp> Richard Petty come down hard against the protests, threaten firing any NASCAR employees who do so.

Petty:

Childress:

I can almost see the General Lee burning rubber and hear the horn blowing.

God its wonderful…

Hang on. You get drugs if you support Trump? I missed the memo. Explains a lot though.

Obviously neither are you.
