Katie Wiederhoeft who took the original photo noted that she was so taken aback she didn’t ask the young man why he was kneeling. She noted that he was filming with his phone as well.

When you stand for the national anthem, together with all the other people around you, of all colors and political creeds, you express unity. You all belong, you are all Americans, and you identify with the country. Whatever color or party or political persuasion you are.

When you don’t stand for the anthem, for whatever stupid reason, you are separating yourself from others.

(C)** all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart,** and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and

(2) when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.
