Trump supporters - so what is you think Trump's "Great America" will look like?

So giving Trump supporters the benefit of the doubt that they don’t want the USA to become some sort of xenophobic, isolationist, fascist state, presumably they voted for Trump because they believe life will generally improve under him as POTUS.

So walk me through what that America will look like.

Think back to the United States in the 1950s. The U.S. dominated the world economically. Lots of good factory jobs. Foreign cars were a very rare occurrence. Blacks knew their place. Women stayed in the home. Abortion illegal. People went to church on Sunday…

I think this is what Trump supporters are thinking of (although not being one I really don’t know).

You’ll never get a true answer based on things that can be measured. The most I ever got from a Trump supporter were things that were already true as of January 19, 2017.

And yet they elected a man who:
Only owns one car from a major American company. And that was a gift.
A Tesla
Mercedes
Rolls Royce
Lamborghini

All his products are made overseas.
He buys Chinese steel and aluminum rather than American
He’s not religious.

What will Trump’s “Great America” look like? It will look like this.

Like a boot stomping on a human face…forever.

Just out of curiosity, why don’t you ask the question somewhere that has a decent number of Trump supporters?

Slee

I’m guessing that, contrary to the OP’s request, about 90-95% of the input in this thread will be from non-Trumpers:
Anyway, I would guess that, in the minds of many Trump supporters, the ideal Trump “Great America” would look like this:

[ul]
A modern version of the 1950s; as others said;[/ul]
[ul]
Big-time economic boom in Appalachia and the Rust Belt; and also massive increase in car manufacturing, etc. jobs in Detroit[/ul]
[ul]
Constant news headlines about American companies beating their foreign rivals (for instance, "Boeing beats out Airbus for massive 200-jet, $40 billion order from Airline XXX[/ul]
[ul]
America being whiter - more whites being born, more non-whites leaving the country. Maybe goes from 70% white to 90% white.[/ul]
[ul]
Get to turn on Fox News every day with anticipation about some pleasing sound bite - maybe Trump putting a reporter in his/her place etc.[/ul]
[ul]
ISIS getting crushed, America’s enemies wailing, Team USA wins World Cup 2018 in Russia, gets all the golds at Tokyo 2020[/ul]
[ul]
Low crime, low taxes, low unemployment, low national debt[/ul]
[ul] Ginsburg and Kennedy retire or die and are replaced by Clarence Thomas-types
[/ul]
[ul]
Planned Parenthood is defunded, abortion clinics close, abortion rates plummet[/ul]
[ul]Guns guns guns[/ul]

Gotta admit Slee and **Velocity **have a point. The more mainstream Conservative Dopers seem in their majority to be dismayed or resigned to try and make the best of the hand dealt, and a number of those more vocal about lustily cheering on Trump on the Board seem by their own words to be not so much looking forward to any policy development as to the taste of Liberal tears.

So let me try and test my “reading” powers – What would an honest, non-trollish Trump supporter hope for in a “Great” America? Probably more producing-something-you-can-touch jobs, more jobs that don’t require a Masters to even get out of entry level, favored treatment for domestic capitalists vs. foreign/multinational, Unleashed Capitalism creating untold wealth and progress, the values mores and ways of “Heartland” Middle America being the default setting AND vocally expressed so, the political class turned over to all fresh faces (except for their own congresscritter, of course, s/he is an all right gal/guy), a return to an assimilationist vision of the Melting Pot, an America nobody dares attack from either abroad or within, celebrated at home and held in awe abroad, and yes, where people have quit bothering him/her with some issue s/he doesn’t really care about.

That Mr. Cheese Puff is probably the person least capable to make all of that happen without creating a horrid mess on the way is a different story.

Yeah, I think this is what they really want. A return to an age when America was the most powerful nation, when foreign policy was simple (the good Americans vs the evil communists), when conservative white men were the undisputed leaders of the system and everyone else accepted that.

However I think a lot of them just support Trump because he listens to and validates their desire for these things. I don’t think his voters will vote against him in 2020 just because he didn’t achieve these things (or they got worse under them). The fact that he understands and at least makes some attempts to help them create the world they want to live in will get him 60 million votes minimum in 2020.

ISTM that a Trump supporter would see subversiveness being the only motivation for asking the question.

OH SHIT so I am not the only one thinking this ! I just told my daughter tonight it was nice knowing her !

Uh, I’d like a cite for any Trump voter giving a crap about the World Cup.

In one of those articles quoted in other threads about Trump supporters being adversely affected by the ACA repeal, one of the small town working class group replied with “what are you going to do” resignation. Many of the people in this demographic have internalized that they will be on the bottom, and what they want is their feelings validated and expressed and something, anything done to address them even if it does not really change things.

I don’t really visit a lot of message boards besides this one.

Although this board isn’t the place to get an answer, I’d sure love to know. What do they want?

My recent theory isn’t about the 50s, or segregation now segregation forever, but it is that they don’t want their beliefs challenged. They believe (for example) in their religion, that gays are bad, that women can’t cut it in tough jobs, that atheists are dangerous - whatever. And anything that causes them to doubt their beliefs makes them uncomfortable. They are incapable of making the change in the way they think.

Assuring rights to gay people means that maybe gays aren’t bad after all, and then they spent all that time hating them for nothing. Better to not think about it and then they don’t have to change.

That was good… thanks for the laugh

This time, Clinton lost because her opponent did a better job of saying “I feel your pain.”

62,985,105 voters, I’m sure some care.

Not so much “I feel your pain” as “I feel your anger.”
