The absolutely most demented claim was that you can be arrested in California if you bring an ID to the polls.
Especially because California is an all vote-by-mail state and no longer HAS “polls” in the traditional sense.

Sure we do! If I want, I can go to my local polling place and vote in person if I want. I’ve only done that once in the last several years, the time when my ballot was ruined by a catastrophic coffee spill.

that makes it illegal for id to be required at the polling center. We were trained to not ask for ID, and if someone presented one, it was just quicker to look at it (or pretend to) than explain it is unnecessary. Lots and lots of Persian expats, and almost all of them, plus the many other foreign born folks here, came in with ID in hand. @Smapti can be forgiven for not knowing; Dumbass, not so much.
I mean, you can still TECHNICALLY vote in person here in WA, but everyone gets a ballot in the mail automatically and you don’t have an assigned polling place like it was back in the day - you can go to the county auditor’s office, City Hall, or the courthouse if you don’t want to mail your ballot or need assistance filling it out, but I don’t think many people take that option.

You’re correct that we all get mail-in ballots. I must admit, I’m not certain that we have assigned polling centers, but if someone from another county comes in to vote there is a different procedure, I assume so the voter’s county can be cross checked, but I can’t say for sure. Tons of folks voted in person and I’m wondering/thinking it’s because this is a pretty red area.
I can’t be the only person who thinks the whole thing was a creation of AI. No way is he able to turn his “articulation switch” on and off at will MHO.
Here is what he will try to do. Whether he succeeds is another question.
- Try to get the post office to refuse to handle ballots.
- Send his goon squads (ICE) to cities like NY, Philly, Detroit, Chicago to scare people away from voting. Maybe try to shut the polling stations.
- Try to intimidate poll workers.
- Confiscate the voting machines.
Incidentally, I think even if the SAVE Act were to pass, it would not be enforced in rural areas, for obvious reasons.
Regarding #2 - it would make sense to send ICE goon squads to Philly and Detroit, not so much NY or Chicago as they are in states that are solidly D. The ICE goons would accomplish much more by showing up in Atlanta, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Anchorage, Des Moines and other cities with potentially competitive races in states DJT won in 2024.
My point being, voter intimidation in solidly Blue states/cities would be pointless. Purple or Red states that may flip will make much more sense.
Any attempt by the goon squads to intimidate voters in Phoenix should prove to be ineffective. In 2016 the primary election in Mricopa proved a disaster. The number of polls were cut by a third and people voting in person had to wait hours to do so. The general election was better but there was still a lot of grumbling. There was a major revamp and the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL) was instituted.
Anyone who wanted to receive their ballot by mail only had to ask. The ballot can be returned by mail or dropped in boxes. If you don’t trust the mail at all* there are a number places you can walk in, receive your ballot printed on the spot, and deposit it in in a ballot box. As a consequence, in the 2024 general election 88% of the votes were early, 12% were cast on election day.
*You can sign up for a tracking service with the registrar and be notified when your ballot is mailed, when it is received, either by mail or deposited in a box, when the signature on the envelope is checked okay, and when the ballot is counted.
Well this certainly flies in the face of trump administration policy to make it as difficult as possible for people to cast their ballots! Can’t have that sort of thing! /s
What the text of the Act actually says is that no coin in the Presidential $1 Coin Program series may bear the image of a living or recently deceased president. If the Trump coin isn’t being issued as part of this series (which, as far as I can tell, ended in 2016), then I don’t see how it runs afoul of that law. (The 2020 Bush coin was authorized under an entirely separate, one-off law.)
DesertDog hits on some insidious ratfuckery that a few red states have already done, severely limiting the number of voting sites and drop boxes in blue areas. Texas is probably the worst offender, forcing voters to stand in line for half a day and making drop off boxes inconvenient to reach. That goes in tandem with Republicans’ opposition to early voting – the more inconvenient it is to vote, the better.
I had to give up election work because of my failing hearing but I’m thinking of being a poll watcher in November just to push back against any possible law enforcement shithousing.
