It is Snakes and Ladders in the UK. Some guy I saw on Youtube with a Ten Things where the US and UK are Different entry mentioned this. He did say ‘chutes’ makes more sense but they like ‘snakes’ and are sticking to it.

I’m a little surprised by that. I thought it was a reasonably well known word. Google ngrams shows that its usage has indeed been declining slowly over the years, after the expected spike during WWII. It was fairly flat during the 1950s and 1960s but started to decline a bit in the mid 1980s. Current usage is about half what it was during the 50s and 60s.
