The “hopped up on stimulants” charge is simply cover for the multi-year lie that Sleepy Joe is mentally incompetent. Right wing media will never allow the truth to impede its agenda and credibility with the True Believers.
But why? Who cares who Trump picks as his VP? It’s going to be some bland, generic toady like Mike Pence except this time screened to ensure he will follow illegal orders. I know the media is going to spend anywhere from a day to a week breathlessly discussing the impact of an event that should merit about as much attention as stepping on a dog turd. I suppose there could be some illuminating discussion around whether or not this VP will have the stones to use the 25th Amendment on Trump when (not if) it becomes necessary and I’d love to hear them ask lots of questions about what almost happened to Mike Pence but I wouldn’t expect any kind of honest answer from the VP candidate.
I don’t think he’s announcing the person at the debate, he just said that they’ll be there.* In other words “If you want this job, be at the debate on Thursday”. It’s very possible he forgot that there wouldn’t be an audience (as did I), but I don’t think it really matters. I think he’s just likes making them do stuff to prove how much they adore him. And that’s always been the case with him. If you want him to do something for you, first you have to do something for him, then he’ll consider (ignore) your request.
Also, anyone willing to kiss his ass this much is exactly who he wants in front of a camera speaking his praises.
*and I’m not even entirely sure he said that on purpose.
Also, he claims he already picked someone but hasn’t told anyone, including that person, who it is yet. Which is why the “they’ll be at the debate” line is going to get a bunch of people to show up.
You answered your own question. Who cares? Every news organization. The rest of the country who doesn’t think like the average SDMB reader. I’m not saying I’m sure he will announce it then but I think it would be a smart move. It would take focus off of his dumb answers.
Or someone standing outside the studio. He never said the person would be on camera or in the studio, just that they would be there.
Also, just as a reminder, this speculation is entirely based on this exchange:
The former president told NBC News at a campaign stop in Philadelphia over the weekend that his future running mate — who remains unconfirmed — will “most likely” attend the upcoming presidential debate.
“They’ll be there,” he told the outlet. “I think we have a lot of people coming.”
Trump clarified that he has decided on his running mate in his “mind,” but “nobody knows” of his pick yet.
IMO, that’s a call to action. He’s telling his potential VPs that if they want to be in the running, they’ll be there. I doubt he really cares about the logistics, he just likes making them jump.
Aside from the fact that (as Aspenglow reminds us) there is another thread for speculation about who Trump will choose as VP-candidate: the most important thing about the topic coming up now is that Trump NEEDS people to be talking about it… so that there will be less time to talk about his horrifying performance at the debate.
He knows that his performance will be horrifying.
If he had any confidence at all that he would perform well, he’d want nothing–no other topic–to take the focus away from his wonderful debate performance.
But: no. He knows. He knows he will need this distraction.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say it won’t be horrifying (though that depends on your definition of the word). His answers will be empty and hollow but not particularly interesting. It’s not hard to answer every question with some form of “I did it the best, lots of people are saying the best ever” and “Sleepy Joe is doing it the worst, people say he’s the worst president ever.” He may be in decline but it doesn’t take much to give answers like that.
