Trump's Executive Order on Immigration - Let it Rip Dopers

Did you notice that he didn’t even get the math talk right?

If there’s a direct relationship between liberal sadness and nonliberal happiness, then (more liberal sadness) => (more nonliberal happiness), which I think is what he meant to say.

But if there’s an inverse relationship between liberal sadness and nonliberal happiness, then (more liberal sadness) => (less nonliberal happiness).

And of course, what he actually said is that there’s a “direct inverse relationship”, which is a contradictory word salad that doesn’t really mean anything at all.

He lost by three million votes. He doesn’t have a mandate to do anything.

whatayamean, he got almost 27% of those permitted to vote.

No, politicians generally do keep their promises or try to. Trump was voted in out of malice and bigotry.

Democracy in the US died the moment Trump and the Republicans took office. There will not be another meaningful national election in my lifetime.

I thought that was an awesome response. As if to remind us all that this shouldn’t be about any individual “liking” or “not liking” any other individual. It’s much bigger and deeper than that.

It makes me physically ill to type his name, or to see an image of his face. I’m not kidding or exaggerating.

So, no, I won’t stop.

Great post. Puts some vivid detail on the general (true) observation that the new administration’s immigration actions are harmful to US security.

Wow.

Building a vertical wall right through the middle of Niagara Falls ain’t gonna be cheap.

I actually thought adaher’s post (87) was well written and spot on. A big chunk of America’s population really IS deplorable. As I posted yesterday in another thread, this saddens me deeply. We’re talking about many of my friendly neighbors, and even a few of my true friends.

But I can’t avoid the facts. And adaher’s right about the voting numbers (independents, bases…). Perhaps there’s not much that can be done but hope that the deplorables tend to die much younger than the others.

Am I really hoping that certain friends and neighbors die soon? That can’t be right. I need to rethink this. But logically, right now I don’t see what other choice I have. It’s that, or stop caring about anything. :frowning:

Just saw on the news that Trump has vowed to continue enforcing his executive order in defiance of the courts. Have I mentioned that Trump knows nothing about the government of the United States? How is this SOB not a modern-day Hitler?

Look I found a really obscure cite that supports Colibri.

I had to dig deep to find this. I had to go to the length of (drumroll please) reading the article linked by the OP. I know, right? How could you possibly have guessed that information relevant to the OP was to be found in the cite linked off from the OP? Everyone is being just so unfair to you.

p.s. Of course it doesn’t bother him that green-card holders are included. During the campaign, he said he’d even block American military members who are Muslim from returning to the US.

I think persuasion can always work, at least on enough people to make a difference. I started out being in favor of a ban on Syrian refugees and was convinced through argument to change my mind. There’s a right way and a wrong way and I think Democrats chose the wrong way, while Dopers(some of them) made a little more sense. Obama’s dig on “widows and orphans” was insulting and was an implicit lie as well, since it is not the US’s policy to only take widows and orphans. But leaders with more faith in the morals and intelligence of the voters than he had could do better.

He’s complying with the decision completely. The whole order wasn’t blocked, just the part about it going into effect so immediately that people on planes or with valid visas couldn’t enter.

Thanks, addy. Food for thought.

Hitler was far more charming and subtle. Haircut’s about the same, though.

Do you have a cite for his precise wording? (My Google-Fu failed me). Because if it was explicitly “in defiance of the courts,” that would obviously refute adaher’s interpretation.

I just went to the front page of CNN and it said DHS is complying with the judge’s decision.

And please, let’s not compare Trump to Hitler. We should compare him to Chester Arthur, who signed the Chinese Exclusion Act. While it’s fine to attack Trump’s decision, and this is not who we are NOW, it’s not fascist either. It’s very much in the American tradition to exclude whole classes of immigrants.

I’m angry at their ignorance, but I try to refrain from despising people. True, some Trump voters - a lot maybe - cannot be saved. But we will need the many others who can be reasoned with.

In no way am I excusing people who knowingly voted for bigotry, but not everyone who did is necessarily a bad person. They just need to be educated, to see something in a different light.
