Maybe not “expected” as much as “prepared for,” in the sense that he didn’t know which judge would be assigned, but he prepared for the worst. If another judge was assigned, great; but if it was Judge Cannon, he’d be well-prepared to bring the matter before her.
I don’t think the mishandling of documents case is “the big one”. The big one is the solicitation of election tampering case in Georgia state court. Note the word “state”; it’s important because Georgia is essentially a purple state, judging by how it voted in 2020. Not particularly inclined to go either way; in other words, a battleground state. So if a Georgia grand jury indicts Trump, the suggestion that Democrats in general or President Biden in particular is weaponizing the machinery of government to attack him.
Others willl say January 6 was a bigger Trump sin, and I’m not sure they are mistaken. But in terms of a direct attempt at election stealing, without intermediaries, Georgia stands out.
It’s normal for defendants and their friends to make nasty arguments when good ones are lacking, so you can’t stop those weaponizing charges. As Carl Sandberg wrote:
It seems the indictment has him more unhinged and dangerous than usual (and, by extension, his followers).
All caps is how Trump wrote it:
Trump vows to ‘go after’ Biden’s family in bitter Truth Social rant before boarding Miami arraignment jet
“I WILL APPOINT A REAL SPECIAL ‘PROSECUTOR’ TO GO AFTER THE MOST CORRUPT PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE USA, JOE BIDEN, THE ENTIRE BIDEN CRIME FAMILY, & ALL OTHERS INVOLVED WITH THE DESTRUCTION OF OUR ELECTIONS, BORDERS, & COUNTRY ITSELF!” fumed Mr Trump in an all-caps rant posted around noon. - SOURCE
Early this AM in an airport I walked past some TVs spread around the building. All tuned to Fox News.
Over several minutes of seeing brief snippets the top headline of the day was Hunter Biden’s laptop. In fact the only headline of the day was that laptop. No other newsworthy stories had come to their attention.
Michael Popok has an 11 minute video on Meidastouch where he outlines his reasoning (based on the court clerk issuing the assignment being in Miami, not Fort Pierce where Cannon is) for thinking Cannon is acting simply as a magistrate judge for the purposes of the arraignment, and the case will ultimately be assigned to a judge in Miami, or would likely recuse herself.
