The Dems don’t have their own version of Fox News to do that kind of dirty work for them. MSNBC kinda gave it a half-hearted try but they could never bring themselves to be as utterly shameless and overtly and relentlessly partisan as Fox could.
And that’s fine.
If I wanted to support a party that used the tactics the Republicans use, I’d vote Republican.
I hear ya but it’s difficult to win at a game where the other side cheats but you must play by the rules.
Not if you can expose them for cheating.
That’s why this indictment matters.
They could. There has been no moral compunction by the executives against doing so. It just doesn’t sell to the Dem side as well.
The Dem side is not all extremists who want relentlessly overtly partisan crap. We have them in our tent to be sure but we actually also have moderates and centrists who want to consume other material than that more and even many of our extremists want to hear the best arguments against their case just to argue against them.
It’s market demand that drives the supply.
I get that and this is more of a gut-level, severe frustration I have. And the thing is, the Dems don’t have to lie or BS. They just have to get the truth out there. Beyond that I don’t have an answer but the whole thing just sickens me.
Do you still think that they care if they are caught cheating? Cheating, hypocrisy, lying etc. are currently accepted weapons of the right. Exposing these things do absolutely jack if they do not result in real world consequences, like very heavy fines and actual jail time. If these things do not happen, then nothing at all has been gained.
Like a former president being investigated and indicted on serious charges, and your main propaganda outlet getting heavily sued for defamation and firing their highest-rated mouthpiece?
I’m not saying it’s all rainbows and unicorns, but you can win by doing things the right way. I think they are winning, though it takes time.
Agreed. And I also think there is a lot to be said for keeping your powder dry.
At the moment, Republicans are hogging every bit of media attention with their inability to call out blatant criming right in front of them. Never interfere while your opponent is shooting himself in the foot. While Republicans are doing so, Democrats can quietly build their ground game, fund raise and put their networks in place for 2024.
I rather look forward to the Democratic ads running on the tee vee after Republicans pick their nominee and we move into the general election season. Republicans have left an embarrassment of riches on camera for Dems to use in their ads. If Dems start using their ammunition this early, it will have little effect when they need it later on.
For now, this indictment – and all the others that are coming – are everything Democrats need to graphically demonstrate who they are v. Republicans. Trump’s efforts to influence the narrative appear to be less successful this time around.
The above poll was taken 4 days ago. Give the information some time to simmer in the public mind, and I believe the numbers will get even better for Dems (although I have already written off about 30% of the total population).
Personally, the first question I ask anyone who is trying to say this is just a witch hunt is, “Have you read the indictment?” If the answer is no, my conversation with that person is at an end. If the answer is yes, but gobbledy-gobbledy-gobbledy-Joe_Biden’s-garage, my second question is, “Do you understand the difference between willful retention and inadvertent retention?” And away we go.
This indictment matters.
I also think there’s the possibility that people get “scandal fatigue” - this guy is mired in scandal after scandal, and people who are otherwise low information voters get sick of hearing about it, and would prefer to have somebody new emerge. It’s going to become especially stark when you consider how repetitive his grievances are.
It becomes like a form of “branding” - this person is damaged goods, they’re corrupt in some vague and general way, and so we no longer have any enthusiasm for them - I’m almost certain that this befell Hillary Clinton in 2016. I think it will have fully set in for donald by early next year.
I agree with your whole post. We’re already seeing it, even among many of his most faithful supporters.
I wish I didn’t agree with you.
This will have no impact on Trump and he will not be sent to prision. End of story and no further debate needed. He will never go to prison!
He will never go to prison!
Presidential elections are decided by state elections, which are often decided by tens of thousands of votes out of millions. See: Trump, Georgia. Lower level elections are often even closer. Boebert was re-elected by 500 votes.
Trump’s base is extremely tight but also smaller than he claims. About 30% of the voting population may fit into it. Trump got 47% of the vote in 2020, 46% in 2016. The farther you get from 30%, the smaller the bond to Trump personally. The final few percent are eminently swayable. They are not switch voters, but apathetic, unconcerned, unallied, prone to going by the last thing they heard.
A constant barrage of indictments, trials, and convictions probably still works to persuade these voters. Jail would be a great topper. The political unknown is that jail creates martyrs and long-term grudges. Would that turn 2% toward Trump while only 1% move away? No idea. I’d still be for jail.
But if the topic is public perception and how that affects voting in 2024 I’m for the Dems blasting both Trump and every other Republican and for the best outcome to sway the middle percents. I don’t know what that is right now. Right now Trump has dug himself a hole and everybody’s watching. Dems shouldn’t distract people from that glorious sight. Later, though, blast the message hard and match the Reps ad for ad, but without the lies.
But will be go to prison?
Nyet, comrade!
On a scale of one to Ned Flanders, how naïve is this opinion article? It suggests that Biden should pardon Trump to mollify those who do not believe he did anything untoward, and that Trump should not have to admit doing anything improper.
How long does it even take to spray paint a Winnebago gold?
No - he has an expert legal team and anything the NY legal team has on him wont hold. Just a matter of time.
The best defense lawyers in the world can’t make damning facts disappear.
To argue in good faith, please read the indictment.
