I feel like it must have been the Kinks? Some British punk band? The refrain is “something something …on elEC-tion day,” yadda yadda, dumdumdedum. I’m terrible with music.
Searching “election day” and “kinks” has not, um revealed what I was seeking.
The band was Arcadia, a side project for a couple of the guys from Duran Duran. The song was, in fact, called “Election Day.”
Looks like kenobi_65 got it. But it crossed my mind that you could have been misremembering Ray Davies’s song “Thanksgiving Day.”
