Do you have enough room in the kitchen for a barstool? My grandmother began using one when she cooked once arthritis crippled her up. She had one for the shower too.
This will be my first hurricane season in Texas, so I made a few preparations. As far as hockey goes, I went to a few Komets games when I lived in Indiana and a few Preds games in Nashville.
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, dogs fed / pilled, KP done and fixing to shower and head to my house to get the scrap paper I forgot. I may swing through Fiesta for a couple of things on the way home.
Ginger, Nelson’s mother’s litter mate is usually the dog who doesn’t want to come out of the crate when the rest do. This morning, she came right out, but Pugsly wanted to stay. The house rule is nobody gets fed until everyone has gone out. He came out about the time coffee was done. Now it’s time for a shower.
And a late-morning check-in. Am finishing off the last bite of my Jersey Mike’s #8 Club, with chips and a banana, so have now added enough calories to feel guilty enough to go to the gym. Rain is due here between 2-4pm so I’ll plan my gym visit for then, seems like reasonable time management. Other than that and dinner provided by Jack’s, nothing exciting is planned.
FCM, yeah, when I get up later in the morning and have to wait an hour after taking my thyroid medication to eat, time just seems to pass soooooo sllloooowww… And I used to be able to drive to my brother’s (400 miles) with maybe one stop, these days it’s 3-4 breaks and still arrive more tired than before.
Cookie, keep an eye on those symptoms, hope you find a good solution to the cooking issue that lets you cook on.
Taters, glad E got a good sendoff. And I know what you mean about odd traffic jams for no apparent reason, they are common enough that they are known as “phantom” jams. I remember leaving work in St. Louis about the same time each day and encountering one of them on I-70 90% of the time…never an accident or broken-down car or any visible problem, just…stop-n-go for a mile…
Mollie, best wishes for Spike. And Happy Pride month!
doggio, I would guess that the only thing more frustrating than loading 90 packages is unloading 90 packages…
I was helping FCD clean his shop, including pulling out the full trash bag and replacing it. The full bag was pretty heavy, so I was going to take it to the truck using the 2-wheel dolly. Which I couldn’t find. I looked in the shop. I looked in the material store room. I looked in the painting shed. I looked in the garden shed. I looked in the garage. I looked in the basement.
Then I looked everywhere again, even looking into corners where it couldn’t possibly fit. And I went back to the shop to tell FCD I couldn’t find it and maybe we’d left it out and someone filched it. Then I saw it in the shop between the lathe and the press break. I’d passed it at least 6 times today. But it never registered.
Partially in my defense, I was looking for a curved grey/silver handle. Turns out the handle is red. Whatevs… I hauled the big, heavy trash bag to the truck, then parked the dolly back where I’d found it.
I had an out-of-state appointment last week and we were trapped in non-moving Seattle traffic (HOV/Express lane) and unable to get into the next lane over for more than an hour. Washington I-5 gums up in many places (like Olympia to Tacoma) and the long-term construction zones aren’t helping.
Used to get hurricanes in the east, but now get tsunamis in the west.
I hope everyone’s Monday is going well. I had a bad case of the don’t-wannas last night and took today off. Still don’t wanna but will have to rally for tomorrow.
Finally just met my last neighbor that I hadn’t had to opportunity to catch outside before now. He’s older and hard of hearing and it started off well - he’s lived there for over 30 years, wanted to talk about the recent hailstorm, etc. Then he asked twice if I lived alone (no husband? not even any kids?) and if I had a dog. Sooooo that’s kind of creepy. Hoping he didn’t mean anything by it but will be double-checking the door locks…
Sticky Buns Great news about your mom! I hope her recovery continues to go well. Is she back home or still in a rehab facility?
Cookie I hope you find a solution for your back trouble. It’s obvious from your posts how much you enjoy cooking (and I enjoy reading about everything you make).
Shoe, that was odd; the cash-grabber. Maybe he owes her money, like a lot more than four dollars?
And as far as money, I’m fretting about something. Izzy and I were at the spa today. (Mr. Rilch’s idea, and dime.) I wanted to tip cash, but I think I may have undertipped. Izzy and I got the same service, same price. $175 each, plus $10.50 surcharge, for a total of $360. The tip was $30, but I think I should have at least made it $40, for a rounded-off total. I booked another kind of treatment for myself next week, so I could leave an envelope for the two people who worked on us. Think I should?
Mollie’s post reminded me of the night my older daughter was born.
It had been snowing all week. There was well over a foot on the ground and it was still coming down pretty hard. We spent the day with our 4x4/off road club out in the country doing hill climbs. We stopped for Chinese food on the way home. About halfway through dinner her water broke. We were ready so I grabbed up out hospital go bag, called our Lamaz instructor (she needed to attend births for her certification) and loaded her into the Blazer. Off into the blizzard we went.
There was no traffic. The snow plows were not running. I made it to the hospital in record time, running every red light along the way. I dodged a few stuck vehicles by easing up on the curbs.
I drove up under the canopy for the ER and loaded Sunflower into a nearby wheel chair then headed for the maternity ward. Someone from the ER desk hollered that I couldn’t park there. I yelled back: “The keys are in the ignition. Move it yourself.”
I had done some work at the hospital so I knew where stuff was. I skipped the passenger elevators, went through a door that said Authorized Personnel Only and took her up to the maternity floor in the freight elevator. Labor went well. The Lamaz lady was helpful. Four hours later we had a beautiful baby girl.
MO is now forty eight and is a self employed hair stylist with a good solid client base.
That’s pretty much how my back responds to the dishwasher, whether loading or unloading it.
Ah, yes – rain. Wiki on the “1985 Atlantic Hurricane Season” leads me to believe that all that rain we got in NorVa back in '85 must have come from Gloria as she passed by offshore.
How much is the new paint costing you? Rents in my area are insane and I get heart palpations when I look at AZ.
I don’t think we get hurricanes here. We didn’t in Arizona either. There were typhoons in Hawaii and Okinawa, I do remember those very well.
Its good to hear from you, I do think of you and your sweet mother on a regular basis. Comprehensive insurance will cover it, but might raise your deductible next renewal. I’d suggest taking it to a body shop and asking if they can buff them out. If you can’t see metal, it will be a good candidate for that.
From last week: Bright Tree, thank you for the kind words about our relocation. It has really been a positive experience for both of us. We are forced to think and learn which is good for old folks, it helps exercise the brain. Moving from a HCOL area to a LCOL area was also nice, we still get happily surprised when getting the bill for things.
Oh and the birds. We had birds in AZ, but now I’m seeing “exotic” wildlife, critters I’ve only seen in zoos on on TV. There are blue jays and pilated woodpeckers at my feeders and a passel of possums cleans up at night.
Of course, we don’t really have a life and didn’t in AZ. The excitement for this week is learning that there is now a Discount Tire in Charleston. Perfect timing because Hubs needs new tires, so we will be visiting the brand new store tomorrow. We used them in AZ for as long as I can remember, here’s hoping they haven’t gotten enshitified since our last visit.
At a busy place like yours, she could probably get enough for a pizza of her own as long as she was fast.
That relationship sounds like its going to last another week or the next fifty years.
Um, yeah?
That sounds like me! My ankles kept wobbling and I was afraid to let go of the railing.
It looks like you are all settled into this retirement thing Ain’t it nice?
Hubs didn’t have the movers pack our washer and dryer because he didn’t see them. Brains are weird.
I can recognize it when it comes on the news or something.
The 1-17 between Black Canyon City and Cordes Lakes would back up for no reason on a regular basis, three and four hour delays in triple digit heat were pretty common. They were taking the top of the mountain range off when we left, hopefully they were able to fix the problem with the re-build.
Howdy Y’all! Right after I posted this mornin’, it rained. Then later in the mornin’ the sun came out. Thus, the opportunity for quality cee-mint pond time overrode the idea of pharmacy and errands. Now we are under a tstorm watch until eleven p.m. I am sure Precious is in a tizzy! Sup got cooked and et. It was fantastic if’n I do say so myself. Plus leftovers for tomorrow. Win-Win!
Taters glad the memorial went well. You have earned a day of RDOS inactivities.
Mollie from the last MMP: glad Squeaky is safely in France. I am sure he wll have a blast. Hope the interview went well for Spike. Happy first Pride Month! OYKW and I don’t exactly acknowledge it, as in, we don’t do anything specific. The folks that matter the most to us know we are a gay couple and are good with it. That’s really the biggest thing we care about. I had now idea there was such a garment as women’s boxers. You done fought some ignernce! What year did you experience the hurricane in Etlanner if you don’t mind my askin’. Surely it was not 1994 cause you can’t have a son that old, right? Actually 1994 was due to a tropical storm/depression, so I am sure it wasn’t.
Cookie and MOOOOOOM if I need to drive any distance I stop every couple of hours for a few minutes. I am old and get achy! Also MOOOOOOM that dolly deliberately hid from you. That’s the story to stick to.
52 I can see how that would give off a creepy vibe. Smart plan to double check the locks.
Frumious if your conscience keeps tellin’ you to do so, then do it. Tippin’ is sometimes hard to figure out. I really wish we could get away from it, but also know that ain’t gonna happen anytime soon.
Ms Peach is finally comfortable back at home. When I first picked her up it was slinky crawl as small as can be on the floor dog, until she realized who I was, then full on 60 lbs of wiggle. I’ve now been home for 3-ish hours and she’s napping on the couch behind me.
Hmm. Hockey. I’ve only been to one live game, and I enjoyed it. But not enough to make going a regular habit. I did grow up ice skating a lot. My birth mother was quite an accomplished skater, so we were taught early. I loved it for most of my life and would go whenever I could bribe talk someone into going along.
As for hurricanes, I’ve never been anywhere near one and that can just continue, thank-you-very-much. Well, except the drink variety. I’d murder one of those.
boofae, I’m happy to hear your weather turned for the better! I’m with you: Give me cloudy and cool over hot and sticky any day!
sticky buns, really good news about your mom! That must be such a weight off your shoulders. Good luck with getting the squirrel damage repaired. Of all the stupid things…
shoe, you do have the best and most interesting stories from your work. And it’s great that S.M. backs you up so readily. People are nuts.
swampy, your supper sounds very yum. Enjoy every bite!
metal mouse, glad to see you’re making peace with your bladder and getting more uninterrupted rest. That’s important.
I’ve learned to drink a couple sizeable glasses of water before a vampire visit. Astonishing how much easier it makes it for them to do their draw.
cookie, the wonky vision episode sounds concerning. I will add my shaking finger (kindly meant) that you keep on top of this symptom and hopefully get some answers for why it’s happening.
taters, sounds like you had a right fine send off for E. Love the statement on his urn. I hope you enjoyed your day of being a homebody!
mollie, yayy for Pride Month! Especially meaningful for you this year, I know. Keep enjoying it!
Love that graphic! Stealing.
red, sounds like you’ve got the dogs under your control. It’s all I can do to wrangle one small but willful dachshund.
Agreed, 52. Creepy. Asking twice, and such pointed questions about your living circumstances. I’m glad you’re keeping an eye on that one.
Frumious, I hope you got this worked out to your satisfaction. It’s hard to know what’s acceptable, but I’m sure they appreciate whatever you decide.
That was a wonderful story, and what a great memory for you. Thanks for sharing it.
I’m so happy to hear that! Reading your posts here, it’s obvious you’ve put a lot of effort into making yourselves at home there and it has paid off. I love the Harry stories – and of course, the GG and Jolene stories and pics! And good for you, doing your weekly protests at the Capitol. I’m in awe of your sticktuitiveness. Even as an RDOS, it’s a lot!
I had to board Ollie for a couple weeks in April while I was out of town, hippie. He was a bit of a mess for awhile when I brought him home, too. It’s hard on them, no matter how good the boarding place is. Glad Ms. Peach is settling back in.
So I woke up this morning dreaming about that big ol’ backhoe I saw of my neighbor’s and realized that it would no-how, no-way fit down my driveway. But maybe the owner knows someone who might have a smaller one that would still work, so I think it’s worth my while to stop and speak with that person when I can.
Quiet day here today. Perfect weather, cool and sunny. Ollie has enjoyed his several romps around the place while I weeded. We still have a planned toddle up to the mailbox soon. Meanwhile, he’s gassing me out with epic farts, an unpleasant side effect of his fiber-heavy diet. In a few weeks, I plan to start dialing back the fiber to see if I can get away with giving him less and still keep the gland issue under control.
I made Dutch Currant Buns last week and have been enjoying them at breakfast with an egg and some ham (eaten separately). Spaghetti for dinner with sauce I made a few weeks ago and froze. Maybe shrimp on the grill tomorrow night, since it’s going to be much warmer.
Ok, time to give the pooch another walk. Enjoy your evenings, all!
Evening all. My timing at the gym was impeccable, I got inside and not 5 minutes later it was pouring rain. Did my sweating (and still gained 2.4lbs this past week). I guess I really need to revise my eating habits, it doesn’t matter how many calories I burn if I’m eating too much (for example, I might exercise 1,200 calories, but eat 3,000 during the day, which is a net of 1,800, which is good, but a lot of those 3,000 calories are things that are not always good for me, so need to dial back some on the snackage). Rain has departed and it’s a comfortable night, 72F heading down to 67F.
Now, what have the rest of you been up too…
FCM, I have two small carrying pod for my hearing aids, couldn’t find either a couple weeks ago so ordered a couple more, and now…there are 4 pods sitting on my desk…where they came from I have no idea.
I remember several years ago taking a drive outside Portland, Oregon to see the Spruce Goose and drove near the Pacific Coast, where there were signs saying “Entering Tsunami Hazard Zone”. Something I’m not used to seeing in N. Ali-bama…
52, might just have been his way of making conversation, but probably better safe than sorry…
Fruminous, I think a $30 tip in that case is reasonable, albeit I never been to a spa.
Hippie, wonderful story, glad you had the right truck (and driver) for the job.
JtC, I have several Discount Tires near me, they changed the ones on my departed Dodge Durango and provided excellent service…hope you have the same experience.
VanGo, glad tidings and scritches for Ms. Peach.
Bright Tree, mostly I have cut back on my soda input, especially at night and that seems to have helped. I’m keeping close track of it, have stopped buying 2-Liter bottles as it seemed every time I went near the fridge I’d pour myself a ‘small’ cup of Diet Pepsi. Now that it’s cans only and I know how much I’m drinking, it’s easier to manage.
And those Currant Buns look delicious.
And that’s all for now. May or may not have a late-night final so see y’all when I can.
I’m thinking my recent bout of coughing is more than a tickle in my throat, what with the congestion and drippy nose (which doesn’t make sense…) Anyway, I decided a snort of nyquil and an early bedtime are in order. If nothing else, I should sleep well. C’mon zzzzzzzzzzzz
I had a good long nap, in spite of the painters possibly finishing up the painting. I’m having the usual First of the month bacon cheeseburger with fries, corn on the cob(with Old Bay butter) and an Old Fashioned.
Went through those, too. My Fran memory was 2 druggies arguing in the street when the eye went over, and being rocked to sleep as Fran shook the 3 story building I was in .
Especially the one I had already loaded.
My FB profile pic for today.
My new lease just started, so my rent went up $80. Spot might have to start an OnlyFans page.
Yeah. The first time I boarded Gordie after I adopted him, he thought he was being dumped for the 3rd time, and had a meltdown as soon as the tech took him around the corner.
I was married to my ex-wife during Fran. We were living in a Craftsman home across the street from Dix Hospital at the crest of Dix Hill. We were stuck for a couple of hours as the creek to our north was flooded, and the dam for Lake Raleigh had burst. The nice thing about living across the street from Dix was our power was on that day.
Bonnie and Bertha both came through on a Saturday. On one I helped my friend move into a garage apartment across the street from the PR. Stumbling distance. Mrs Magill and I watched a State game during the other. Rain suits FTW!
I was living in a townhouse in a college neighborhood with my brother during Floyd. There was a high tension wire right of way right behind us. The aforementioned friend[1] had come over for a hurricane party. We woke up to find a jeep sitting on its axle, stuck in a creek in the back. A lot of beer told some of the college kids that going four wheeling in the right of way that hadn’t been mowed in a couple months and they found the creek the hard way. The next morning, I’d gotten out my camp stove, heated some water, made coffee, and watched these fools try to get their jeep unstuck.
