Trying To Reason with Hurricane Season - A Hockey MMP

It’s (Meteorological)hurricane season today, and for the first time in 20 years it’s (hockey) Hurricane season, which I dread a lot less. Most of the experts are picking Vegas, but like I noted on a Cane FB group, this ain’t Tribal Council, they can’t vote us off the island. In any case, I’m up, caffeinated, and sheveled, off to heave. Talk amongst yourselves.

FIRST! Tis good to be an insomniac juvenile.

Aren’t hurricanes a fancy mixed drink?

Indeed it is, a complete sentence to appease Discourse.

Ooooh, passionfruit puree. How fancy!

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 14c/57f with a high of 17c/63f and cloudy. Weather app says “Welcome to today. It’s a grey bucket of fucking suck outside. You’re fucking welcome.”

It is indeed overcast and cool outside which is perfect weather as far as I’m concerned. I’ve had more than enough heat and sun for now, I am due something cooler and fresher.

We don’t get hurricanes around here, just the tail end of yours as they blow across the sea and give us some stormy weather. Oohh…continuing on the cocktail theme…dark and stormy!

I am working from home today, the on campus for three days, then home again on Friday. I need to do the grocery shopping at lunchtime today so I have stuff to make campus food with. I’ll do that when I log out this afternoon, and before I go to the gym for tonight’s spin class. Let’s hope it’s more varied than the last one.

Annie says she’s not amused by hockey. If she can’t hold the stick or take off with the puck in her mouth, what’s the point? She’s a little grouchy right now, though. She had her final two teeth removed on Friday. She’s doing well after the surgery.

My mom is doing much better. She’s walking with a rollator and the PT lady is working on transitioning her to a cane. And the other day she even voluntarily walked out to the car and back! She walked to the car to try to look at the mystery scratches on it, but the sun was too bright. Nonetheless, there are significant scratches on the hood and one of the doors. We have a large squirrel population and we suspect they were the ones that did it. I wonder if insurance covers that kind of damage?
Today is going to be a whirlwind. More about that later, hopefully. I need to go jump into this day.

From last night’s shift, in the “This has NEVER happened to me in all my years of customer service” department …

Guy orders a sammich, hands over cash, I ring him up, he’s due $4 even in change.

I go to give him his money, and the most pissed-off woman this side of Angry Italian Mom snatched the money straight out of my hand. Like, took his four ones in change right from my fingers.

Me: :open_mouth:

Mind you, I haven’t interacted with this woman, we haven’t spoken, I haven’t heard her place an order, and now I am thinking, “Is she just, what, going around robbing people? For four bucks?” when they have a quick convo, and then she orders her own food.

So I figured, okay, they seem to know each other.

I told S.M. what happened, and she said, she thinks they were on a “date” and homegirl thought she was getting a free meal. When she found out he expected her to buy her own snacks, she got  . (Is “big mad” already outdated slang?)

Most likely the correct explanation; they left together but she was clearly Not Happy ™ … but I have never had the non-customer SNATCH ca$h meant for someone else directly from my hands, and it was .. I dunno, but yikes.

I stepped outside for a couple of puffy-puffs after that. (This was after a lineup of some other seriously trashy drunks, and I’d just had it for a second. A brief break, and I was back to my pleasant mask self.)

Runner-up in the “Sandwich? You do know we sell pizzas, right?” category :trophy: goes to the ham+bacon+chicken+8ish veggies (olives, onions, mushrooms, fuck what all else) and we could barely smash that thing closed, it had so much crap ingredients on it.

Also, yes, when you ask for extra meat, you gonna get extra charged.

Argue with me & I can summon S.M. without even turning around. (She’s gotten good at hearing the difference between my chirping, friendly, “you’re so welcome, have a great night!” voice, and my “do we have a problem, SIR?” voice.)

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 71 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 88 and partly cloudy for the day. TWPTB say no rain, but who knows. Precious could use the break. I need to call the pharmacy to re-fill a couple ‘scripts and need to do some errandy type things. I suppose I could do all that this mornin’. Sup will be a hunk o’ beast in the slow cooker with carrots, baby lima beans, squishes, rice and bizkits. We are in the mood for some real food.

We had a cat. one hurricane come through here in 2018. That is the only one I have experienced and do not wish to repeat the experience. I have also experienced a tropical storm and do not wish to repeat that either. A tropical depression hung around the area in 1994 dumpin’ many inches of rain over a wide area and causin’ a huge flood. Again, I wish not to repeat that experience. However, I do hope doggio’s 'canes wreak havoc on the hockey finals.

shoe people be weird and strange and all kinds of stuff. I would bet that was a possible first and last date. Also, duh, order extra you get charged extra.

Sticky_Buns so glad mom is doin’ much better! Glad Annie is doin’ well after her surgery.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, I suppose if I am to go out amongst the great unwashed, I should purtify and don acceptable attire. Rah. Also ICK!

Happy Moanday Y’all!

Awaiting my turn with the vampire. It’s a loverly cool morning, about 59 Ferrets, and the wifi here works. Barely. Once I’ve been bled, I’ll run (toddle?) to Food Lion for 'nanners, then home to maybe futz in the yard.

Now, tho, it’s game time as I wait.

Happy Moanday!

Morning all. Apparently I have come to an agreement with my bladder, don’t drink too much Pepsi after 8pm and I get to sleep until 6:30am uninterrupted. 70 ferret heights outside now and heading to 83F later, with rain due around noontime. Will procure my Jersey Mike’s sammich well before that and maybe even get some house-irk done. Not much else on the weekly agenda, we’ll just see how it goes.

I think I saw a hockey game in-person many many years ago (Cleveland Barons IIRC) and never really got interested (I tried ice skating exactly once in my life, after 60 minutes of ice falling, I gave it up). As for the other Hurricanes, I do not partake of the drink one and try to avoid the weather one (we usually get drenched 2-3 times a year from the tail end of the larger storms).

shoe, I still think you ought to publish some of those stories on the Not Always Right webpage, with S.M. permission of course.

Sticky Buns, glad the Mom-news is more positive, hope the squirrel/car problem can be solved (I keep me car in the garage, so nothing yet).

FCM, happy futzing once your done bleeding…

And onward into the week. Have a good one all.

A cheerful good morning! Today’s Elkhart weather will be mostly sunny and 80 ferrets. Right about now, though, we’re going to get some rain. Looking at the radar prediction map, I can see a huge blob of wet weather racing from SSE to NNW, lightly brushing my spot. Frognosticators can only do so much, so we’ll see what actually happens.

Somebody eventually won the NASCAR race at Nashville after I went to bed

Breakfast of champions!

I wonder if they could stop laughing long enough to process your claim.

Probably one of the drivers, though at my level of knowledge of such things you might want to check that just to be sure.

56 ferrets/13 centipedes at 0800. Are you sure it’s June? They’re saying we’ll have 70s the next two days, followed by (finally!) five days in the 80s. On the other hand, 43/6 tonight. Somebody needs to give Mother Nature a new calendar; the one she’s been using seems to be defective.

Hurricanes? As with almost all ball games (yes a puck is just a flat ball), I’m not at all interested in the sport. The weather? Irene dropped a big branch from the neighbours’ willow onto my driveway, after which Sandy dropped the rest of the tree on my car the following year. That’s quite enough exposure to them for me!

Plenty of RDOS (in)activity this week, though we might go grocery shopping at some point, I’ll have to swap out books at the library and I have a neuro appointment Thursday (though it went on the schedule so long ago I can’t remember which doctor ordered it, or why).

Coming up on time to feed the cats, after which I might try to go back to sleep.

My blood was particularly slow today, but they got all they needed, so I’ve got that going for me. The Food Lion stop yielded 'nanners as well as fresh pineapple chunks and some blueberries. In fact, I’m having some of the blueberries in oatmeal at this moment. That’s why I go to the vampire early - I need to have a fasting blood draw and I’m used to breakfast before 7, so having to wait till 8:30 leaves me with a rumbly tummy.

But I’m home, so Otis is happy. And my tummy is getting happier. And I’m getting caffeinated, so balance is nearly restored. I did get the dishwasher emptied before I left - there’s at least one accomplishment! We’ll see how the rest of the day goes. Maybe I’ll mow.

I’m up, I’m up already!

Got a bit of rain last night, which is good, and may get more later in the week, which should help with fire conditions in the state.

My son’s graduating senior is having his party next weekend, which we may go to. If not, I’ll still send a hefty check. Driving any distance is very wearying any more.

Made stroganoff last night, which damn near did me in. My back was screaming at me about half way through, and in the middle of prepping, my vision went wonky and I couldn’t read the recipe. Oh, the hilarity! Had to take a couple of Aleve in order to soothe the demons.

The rest of the week looks to be fairly tame. Carry on, all.

I strikes me a odd that something you do mostly sitting down can wear you out so much. We drove a total of 160 miles yesterday - to Grasonville and back - and when we got home, I was beat! And our Santa Fe is pretty comfortable. What’s up with that?

ETA - FCD sent me this link - just for info, not to buy. I don’t spend that much for a fridge for the house!!! Then again, if you have a half-a-million yacht, this is chump change.

Mornin’ everyone.

It’s 46F and clear outside. The forecast calls for daytime highs of 77F, but clouds are supposed to move in by mid-afternoon, giving us partly cloudy skies from then and throughout the night.

I’ve gone to exactly one hockey game. I guess it was fun, but it was a long time ago, and I can’t remember being particularly excited by it.

Sticky Buns, I’m glad your mother is doing so much better. I hope lil’ Miss Annie is feeling less grumpy soon.

The memorial service was nice. I arrived there just before 10:00 to help set up. The service was held in a historic home built in 1859 that is now an event venue. We had everything set up well before people came for the service. There was an honor guard there, and P, the PIO from my former agency, produced a really lovely video that included pics from E’s childhood to now. Many of us shared memories of E, which was just what his K (his wife) wanted. E was also there, in his urn, which stated, “I’ve still got my funny bone” on. it. He was a really humorous guy, known for his pranks, dad jokes, and his generosity. Also on display were some examples of E’s craftsmanship; he made beautiful wooden bowls.

We started cleaning up around 3:00, and I left at 3:30. I texted my son and asked if he minded my stopping by to say hello since I was five minutes from his house, and he told me to come on by. I chatted with him for a little over an hour, and then headed home. Traffic was a pain. There’s a spot on I-5 northbound that always jams up with stop-and-go traffic, but there is never anything there to cause the jam. It doesn’t matter if it’s a weekday or a weekend. There is no construction, nothing. It’s annoying as hell because this backup area runs for 11 miles.

I plan to do a bunch of nothing today. I mean, I’ll tidy the kitchen, and I’ll need to tend to my plants, but that’s about it. I don’t want to go anywhere today, period, end of story.

Alrighty, time to get my day started. You all take care of yourselves, please.

Mowage has been accomplished. plus I drove back and forth along the driveway by FCD’s shop to blow the leaves off. The yard looks better. Not great, but better.

Then I threw the chewed-up jug for Otis till he decided he didn’t want to play any longer. So now I’m in the house deciding what happens next. There are a few things out front that need my attention, so I guess I’ll tend to them. Then, who knows??

Good morning, all! The weather cooperated, and we walked. The setting moon was very pretty. Chloé had to stop to access the health of every bird poop this morning.

Spike has an interview for a summer job today. I’m hoping they don’t make him a nighttime heaver heaver at Amazon. I don’t think he would function well staying up all night.

It’s Pride Month! My first one since coming out. Okay - so I’ve only come out to the MMP, and selective friends and family, but I’m Out! To celebrate, I’m wearing gender affirming gym shorts, which (unlike my other gym shorts) are pretty obviously not guys’ gym shorts. We’ll see if anyone says anything at yoga this afternoon. I put out the Pride garden flag. It’s right next to the Wolfpack and the “In this house we believe…” flags.

I never got into hockey, even when the Hurricanes came to Raleigh. My dream is to raise a billion dollars, buy the naming rights to the ESA, and name it the Jim Valvano Arena.

As for the storm kind of hurricane, I used to live in Raleigh. I’ve got stories.

Mrs Magill just sent me a link to a store selling women’s boxers as a “crossover option”. I’m tearing up. I married the best person. I haven’t asked her to start using she/her pronouns yet, and I don’t know if I will, but I see a light at the end of the tunnel.

FWIW, I was not offended either. I just wanted to stress just how important something as little as pronoun preference can be. Sometimes it’s hard to break habit, but it is noticed and appreciated.

Stickybuns - Good news about your mother. I’m glad she’s moving. I also think insurance may cover squirrel scratches. It doesn’t hurt to call your provider.

Swampy - I had only experienced one hurricane remnant when we lived in Georgia. It was the day Fang was born. Mrs Magill had been in labor for over thirty-six hours when the OB said, “The boy ain’t comin’ out that way,” and ordered an emergency C-section. Twelve hours later, Fang was in the nursery and Mrs Magill was in a room resting, so I decided to head to our apartment to have the first shower and change of clothes in three days. There was so much rain, and everything was flooded. Apparently some storm had come ashore and then sat on top of Atlanta for twenty-four hours. I was glad I’d driven her Blazer, rather than my Cabriolet.

Cookie I hope your back is better.

FCM - Holy Moley! Now I know why I don’t have a boat, besides the whole “no place to put it” deal.

Taters - That sounded like a good service, and I dig E’s inscription.

The FUBAR leaked over from Saturday. I was loading on 300 Middle Blue and Red(6 cars), and there was a lot of stuff. And when they fianlly printed off the load charts, I saw the one bulk load was 90 packages. I told the Sup, who told dispatch, who cut that stop, but then I had to unload 90 pacakges. I was so slammed 3 of the drivers finished loading, and that almost never happens with me. I was worm out. I did my Aldi run and filled up Carmen. I’ve had my dry, flavorless bits(with milk and blueberries), and spot has had his(plain and dry). Now it’s naptime. After I pay the rent.

Yay walking!
Boo squirrels keying Mom’s car.

If my first hockey game had been a Barons game, I wouldn’t be a hockey fan, either.

I did that when I got home.

For 3K it better produce infinite cans of beer.

You jnixed us, I think.

It will always be Rod Brind 'Amour’s Castle to me.

Fran?
And Happy Pride!

I think part of it is freeway stress, but for me it aggravates the arthritic joints (neck/hip/back). We had some low pressure systems move through the area recently, which also aggravates arthritis issues.

I actually do have a stool that I made when I was doing woodworking. Unfortunately, it has zero back support, which is what I need. I think I’m going to move my food prep activity to the dining table, where I can sit in a chair. Cooking is the last enjoyable hobby that I have. I’ve been doing it for nearly 60 years and I fear that if I have to give it up, it will cause depression to rear its ugly head. Perhaps if I stop being a kitchen nazi and let my wife help out, it will be easier, although watching her trying to dice an onion with a paring knife makes me grind my teeth.
