Again, you’re reading it far more literally than is appropriate. I forget the name of the literary device where you comment on something by saying, “I’m not going to comment on that,” but it’s a pretty common device; calling it a broken promise is pretty hyperbolic, in my opinion. The standard reading of the device is that it’s an oblique reference to something that, in the author’s opinion, doesn’t merit full discussion.
But you were the one to refer to the promise as an actual, literal promise to overlook something, not me. I personally think it wasn’t meant as an actual “I swear an oath” type of thing, but more along the lines of “I’ll try not to”.
It may be a literary device, but if we go by the more casual conversation approach of looking at it rather than a formal literal approach, generally pointing out a flaw in someone else and then remarking on how you’re not going to attack them for it is fishing for compliments.
As I said in the other thread, it’s the latest entry in Tuba’s book of “How to act unprofessionally for fun and profit” and that’s about all. It’s already there, but if I’m misreading things, Tuba has had ample time to clear it up. Other than that, there’s not really a lot I can do, obviously, except chalk it up into the intangibles column of whether or not I stick around (which at this point, I imagine, would bother many people not at all).
For the most part, I feel the administration and moderation around here is acceptable-to-very good. As I stated before, I feel even Tuba has offered much to this board. I feel there are any number of people who could do her job in an acceptable manner (i.e. without screwups like last year and this one (as relatively insignificant this one is when compared with that one)). Whether they would take the job or not is another matter entirely. As for naming names, I have no idea, since I don’t pay much attention to the administration around here when things are running smoothly, which is much if not most of the time.
In reading the countless threads on this topic and the defences of TubaDiva therein, I still can’t see any reasonable reading of her statement other than, I really wish to ban you. But I don’t have grounds to. I’ll try not to let that influence me, but I’m only human, so better watch yourself anyway. And that’s a threat. And an inappropriate one, coming from someone who does have banning power.
If that doesn’t sum up what’s wrong with the world today, I don’t know what does…
Why do you think this board would die without her? Sure, she has put a lot of work into the board over the years, but I certainly don’t see how the board would die without her. Especially since a shitload of people just paid more money to post here. If they want the board to go on, somebody will step up.
I have been here a long fucking time, and think Tuba needs to resign. She has a short fuse now, and apparently doesn’t give a shit how she comes across anymore.
So fucking what, life goes on, maybe the board will also.
Although once the reup subscription thing shakes out, I think membership will drop way down.
The Reader never figured out a way to make any money off the member database, so they probably don’t give a shit either.
Not yet. Just you wait, 'enry 'iggins, just you wait… If they didn’t give a shit, your post would have been swallowed up in the ether. The board is still operating. They must give a shit.
Go find me one that equals this one. When come back, bring more than pie.
They’ll “give a shit” until they figure out how to make a buck off of this gig. Why would you flush something that has a promise in the future world of the internet to give them an income that they can’t get off of the old world model of a print newspaper?
Newspapers, god bless them, are in a world of hurt. My local paper, the Akron Beacon Journal, in in danger of folding.
And yes, you sound snarky.
I’m not about dissembling. I try to tell it like it is. I apologize when I think I’m wrong. Usually.
Trust me. The Reader will allow this money pit to continue, because it’s tied to the future. You and I are just lucky that’s the case. In any other scenario, we’d be toast.
With all due respect, if they still can’t figure out how to make a buck off this gig it’s because they’ve had their fingers in their ears and blindfolds on. For years there have been talented, skilled people with real-life business experience offering their expertise on how to make the boards profitable. Offers of donations have been rejected for ages - members have been willing to flat out give you money! and yet you’re still claiming someone up the chain is scratching their heads about how to be profitable?
