I think that may actually be Paul Begala, but there is a resemblence.
(Also, just to clarify, I don’t think that Stewart was ever actually employed by CNN: the above screencap appears to be from a particular appearance that he made on Crossfire in 2004, and at that time, he was hosting The Daily Show on Comedy Central.)
100% agree with you there. Both are facing potential penalties already and adding a Tucker Carlson just increases their risk(s). In a rational word I can’t see how they can afford to take on that possible liability and have their business survive.
I don’t think of Trump as much of a leader. He gets on a stage and just whines about himself. He’s super popular because he threw away all the norms and just overtly came out with all the bigotry and tribalism, in a dumbed down way that appealed to people who didn’t want to hear nuance.
Tucker can do all that, but without the whining.
The only question to me is whether Tucker could trade personal attacks as effectively. But that’s not an issue of leadership.
If tuckums was trump’s vp, the MAGAts could breathe freer knowing they’d be in good hands should trump take his rightful place at the right hand side of God.
I don’t have much else to add, except I was listening to an oldies channel on Pandora.com. Right after I saw this thread, “Na Na, Hey Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye” came on.
Boy, I wish I could find a link to share showing spontaneous celebrations in the streets by New Yorkers upon hearing of Carlson being fired by Fox News (I saw it on (sheepish) TikTok (/sheepish). It made me smile to see so many happy people. I hope it gets posted somewhere more respectable.
The public, or at least the R half of the public, has been conditioned to want a loud-mouth celebrity. TC is one such. They are not voting on somebody to be a functioning President. They are voting on someone to play President on reality TV.
I don’t know how much TC writes his own material or at least brainstorms his own material to then be fleshed out by pro writers. Somebody playing President on reality TV can’t be totally incapable of ad libbing; that’s where DeSantis fails.
If TC can ad lib, he’s got a good shot at it. Certainly a better shot than all the “Who’s that?” wannabe R primary candidates who’re hovering uncertainly in the wings.
The only alternative explanation I can see is that he’s auctioned his allegiance to the highest bidder. And it’s Agent Orange, not Murdoch.
My bottom line:
IMO TC is in much too of high-profile a position to simply disappear; he’s going to be a mover and shaker for awhile yet. Whether as a news-maker or opinion-shaper remains to be seen. But one or the other for sure. And my bet’s on the former.
To the tune of “Imaginary Lover” from the Atlanta Rhythm Section:
Unemployment Tucker
Nose orange and brown
When Daddy Warbucks throws you away
Go to ground
Count your dirty treasure
Fuck Democracy
You never cared
It’s just sociopathy
Unemployment Tucker, get in line, you have time
Unemployment Tucker, oh yeah.
funny the thought was it was going to be small timers like pirro and maria whats her name on their finance channel getting the axe although they might be going still
He’s not a genuine leader at all. But Trump is good at playing the alpha dawg (he’s the alpha to morons only, but still–there are a lot of morons out there).
He can’t. DeSantis can’t either. It’s not easy to do.
It’s like saying that any of the dumdums that opposed Trump in the 2016 GOP primary could have beaten him had they just been as big a dick as he is. No, they needed to show greater dominance than Trump.
Carlson is pure beta. (DeSantis, IMO, is a dickish alpha but nowhere near the caliber of Trump.)
Josh Marshall from Talking Points Memo (the best US politics news outlet, IMO) suggests that Fox wouldn’t make this decision lightly, even if Carlson and Fox Management had serious issues, considering his ratings. Rather, he suggests, there’s some bombshell about Carlson that is likely to come to light in the future – whether relating to the Abby Grossman lawsuit or something else.
