I grew up dancing at gay bars, because they were the only ones with the good, or sometimes the ONLY, real dance floors. While I’m boringly heterosexual, I really loved just dancing the night away with anyone and everyone on the floor. So to celebrate the music that you just can’t help dancing to, let’s get some songs together that will keep people out on the floor all night long! Thanks to Mr. A. Cooper for this week’s inspiration
I’m going to start with the obvious, but I’m sure folks know a lot more current music than I do. The songs don’t have to reference anything in particular, but they DO need to keep the party going!
I have to add another, because I have a little story to go with it…
Nah, it is too long.
I will sum up.
It came on after I’d already been dancing my ass off, the way only a sober, dance-happy, rarely-gets-out-to-dance 17 year old can, for several hours. By the time this song came on I was literally weak-limbed and ready for a break. I was on a big cube that was set up, planning to sit the next one out, and then this came on. I stood up and jumped enthusiastically into the air toward my partner, who knew I wouldn’t be able to resist.
And of course landed on my ankle with that lovely CRUNCH sound I have always been so familiar with, since I hear it at least once or twice a year. /facepalm
“Dancing Queen” - ABBA
“It’s Raining Men” - The Weather Girls
“Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” - Michael Jackson
“Holiday” - Madonna
“Vogue” - Madonna
“Groove Is In the Heart” - Dee-lite
“Believe” - Cher
“Gettin Jiggy Wit It” - Will Smith
“I Don’t Feel Like Dancing” - Scissor Sisters
“Born This Way” - Lady Gaga
“Firework” - Katy Perry
“Crazy In Love” - Beyonce
“Sway” - Michael Buble. It’s a bit ‘Dancing With The Stars’-ish, but it makes me want to put on a fuschia spandex halter dress and a flower in my hair.
“Funky Town” - Lipps Inc.
" Everybody Have Fun Tonight" - Wang Chung.
“Ray of Light” - Madonna. (When you are at the stage of pull-out-all-the-stops).
It’s impossible to go wrong with Ke$ha. “TiK ToK,” “Blow,” “We R Who We R,” and “Take It Off” are the greatest thing mankind has ever created. And don’t forget Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” in which Kesha has a prominent uncredited role.
Kesha was going to be my guilty pleasure suggestion on edit… but the window closed while I was composing it. I took that as divine intervention, but here I am calling myself out yet again
Love the suggestions so far! My contributions, since some of my favorites were already mentioned:
“Fort Knox” - Goldfish
“Keep Hope Alive” - Crystal Method
“Rock DJ” - Robbie Williams
“Here It Goes Again” - OK Go
“Strike It Up” and “Everybody Everybody” - Black Box
“Tainted Love” - Soft Cell
“Gonna Make You Sweat” - C+C Music Factory feat. Martha Wash
