Turkey Shoots Down Russian Warplane.

If NATO won’t help Turkey protect its airspace, perhaps South Korea will.

Wow, those guys must have had a really busy day if they didn’t have the time to wait for that parachute to just float down.

Yes, posturing, because Putin is quite aware that the rest of NATO is capable of applying pressure to Turkey to make sure “accidents” are less likely to happen in the future.

Yes - apparently someone is claiming they shot a pilot descending under parachute, which is generally considered a no-no as such a guy is no longer in combat and pretty defenseless. If somebody did do that they have more to worry about from the Russia than the Turkish government does.

The anti-Assad Turkmen rebels were presumably the Russians’ targets here to begin with. Now they will be again.

Wait. Is there anything to this claim? I know Turkey was only ever admitted to NATO because the Western powers were trying to show they weren’t Islamophobic, but have they been supporting ISIS?

Errr, wait, what? Turkey joined NATO in 1952, (alongwith) Greece because of anti-communist positions and to secure the southern flank of the Mediterranean and control access to the Black Sea.

Political Islam was more than a quarter of a century into the future then.

Are you on drugs? NATO is an anti-Russian alliance. Turkey wanted into NATO because they wanted protection from the Russkis. We wanted Turkey in NATO because we wanted everyone we could get into the anti-Russian alliance. Turkey joined NATO in 1952. That’s looooooong before anyone was worried about fucking Islamophobia.

The Ottoman Empire/Turkey has been involved in European power politics, diplomacy, and wars for hundreds of years. Getting Turkey onside against the Russkis was imperative back in the 50s, you’d prefer Turkey as part of the Warsaw Pact? Luckily for the Turks they stayed out of WWII and so didn’t get invaded by the Russians and turned into the People’s Republic of Turkey.

That’s ridiculous. Turkey bordered the Soviet Union, that’s why NATO wanted them in. Also, I doubt many people gave a shit about appearing Islamophobic in 1952.

Anti Soviet and Eastern Block. Turkey borders Bulgaria.

Has Russia ever NOT claimed innocence?

They weren’t worried about the Bulgarians back in 1952.

Even before it joined NATO, Turkey was menaced by the USSR. In 1946, its ambassador died in Washington, so the US used this for a show of force by returning the body with the USS Missouri as a really, really impressive hearse.

On the one hand, from a global stability POV this seems like it merits at least a raised eyebrow. OTOH, it has lead to the fantastic headline

Possibly their radio broadcasts were gobbled.

OTH, the Turks have always been the bastard stepchild of NATO, so I doubt they will get much support except from the United States. Certainly the Euros are going to stay out.

3.5 million Russians visited Turkey in 2012/2013. There is an advisory against visits now. That is going to hurt.

Yeah, Turkey receives more tourists from Russia than from any other country. Guessing this is the end of that. I’m guessing tourism to Egypt will decrease as well… So maybe now they’ll start flooding into Iran instead?

From here:

And just a couple of weeks back, the Russians and the Iranians announced the opening of mutual tourism offices, to boost Russian tourism to Iran.

Man-I can hardly wait-those burqua-bikinis on iranian beaches!

Did you mean to say “burqas”? They’re very uncommon in Iran.

As for beaches, Kish Island has more than a few, and basically the entire island has been turned into a vacation resort. I can easily imagine Russians flooding the place.

Wiki says they are uncommon but this article would disagree.

I just wanted to let you know I appreciated this. Well done.

That article says nothing at all about the prevalence of the burqa in Iran.

Feel free to try again.
