I once had a job where we worked staggered shifts. I started early and left early, so my lunch break came at 10 am.
One day management brought in box lunches for everybody. You know - sandwich, chips, and a cookie, that sort of thing. Since I had already eaten, I wrote my name in big black letters on three sides of the box, and put it in the fridge for the next day. When I went back for it, the box was still there… minus the sandwich. Man, was I pissed. 14 years later, that memory still makes me mad.
I never had problems with people stealing my lunch. My main complaint about community refrigerators were the slobs who didn’t wipe up their spills (like half a can of coke that filled the bottom of the fridge for weeks til I cleaned it) or the forgotten foods that nearly became sentient. Definitely don’t miss those days.
Meanwhile, I have pushed the vacuum around the common areas as well as on the couch (using the upholstery attachment, of course.) Lots of cat fluff has accumulated since the last time - about 4 days ago. And I cleaned toddler fingerprints off the TV screen. Plus lunch fell in there somewhere.
I need to haul some pellets out to the shop - thank goodness for the 2-wheel dolly. We rescued it from a neighbor’s trash pile one morning about 17 years ago, and it’s been a wonderfully handy item. It’s banged up and a little bent, but it does the job, and so it shall again in a few minutes.
FCD texted me - he’s trying to persuade his folks to at least visit us for a couple of weeks. But he says they’re caught in a “doctor vortex” - their lives revolve around appointments and such. It’s really sad, bordering on pathetic. No telling if he’ll have any luck with them.
Reading this thread is a bit like sitting in the pub and listening to a bunch of strangers chatting at the next table. Loads of references I don’t understand, made worse cos most of you are 'merican.
We are in lockdown here but it has made little difference to us as we have pretty much stayed home since last March. We lost a couple of grand on a villa in France where we were going to be joined by granddaughter (3yo) and her parents. The cruise we had booked for the autumn has been postponed to this year and now our ruby wedding anniversary in a posh hotel in Gibraltar in April is looking unlikely.
bob - if it’s any consolation, I don’t understand a bunch of references either, especially if they’re from certain movies or TV shows I’ve not seen. But it’s not like this is a thread for serious discussion or debate, so your analogy is appropriate. We even have the occasional drunk commentator!
Where were you going to cruise? We were going to do New England and Canada this past Sept, but that’s now scheduled for Sept '21. And a quickie western Caribbean cruise shifted from Feb to June, assuming we get vaccinated by then. So I feel you pain. Sorry about the wedding anniversary - I think you’re correct that April is unlikely, alas. So stay with us and commiserate!
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s been a grey and dreary day here, the weather app says “It’s dark and cold, like my soul” and promises me 1C/34F to 2C/35F for the day. It’s been snowing, raining, sleeting and freezing fogging so that just about sums up my day.
Irk has been more than irksome, I haven’t caught up with you lot either because I’ve only just logged out of my irk laptop and realised there’s life outside the Uni’s grasp. Filled in my timesheet which glared at me in red 'cos I’ve got just over 75hrs banked now. I could just work four days a week for the next couple of months but I doubt I’d get away with that.
Oh well, time to get a cuppa, contemplate dinner and catch the news to see what Bojo the Bumbling Buffoon has been up to today. No doubt making a mess of whatever it is, as is his wont.
Thanks, FCM. We were (are) doing Southampton to the Canaries via Lisbon and back to Southampton. My wife uses a wheelchair so a no-fly cruise is easiest. The Gibraltar trip was (will be) our first time flying with a chair.
Previous cruises have been to the Med, St Petersburg and Norway.
Dinner to cook now. Back later with a glass of Merlot to fortify me.
How about you calling a doctor in your area, make appts for them near you and then they have to come up for a visit to keep those appts?
Then you will have them there and they can find out that there are doctors, hospitals and pharmacies there in MerryLande that their lives can revolve around? Then, when FCD needs to dash over to help with something it’s only a few miles or a half hour, not 4 states and 12 hours away. If it were me and I had a chance to live 20 minutes away from your daughter and Rox, my grandma and great grandma butt would be there in a heartbeat. Weekly Sunday dinners at FC estates’s ? Done!-my bags are packed and the furniture sold.
Moving during lockdown is still a stupid idea, but appears to be progressing, slowly. I have to go drop stuff off in Bristol tomorrow (technically arguably legal, as I’m allowed to pick one household as a ‘support network’, and there is absolutely nothing in there about being in the same county), so I’m meeting up with a friend in the park as well.
I’m thoroughly sick of housing agents- they appear to be drowning me in forms- I offered to pay the full 6 months up front 'cos I knew I’d have trouble with the income referencing as I only have a temp job, only for them accept that, and insist on my providing exactly the same referencing anyway
I’m still not even sure if I have anywhere to move to, and I’m handing the keys in for this place next Friday, and I need to physically be in Essex 3 days later ready for irk.
On the plus side, I had a chat with my future boss earlier, and she was encouraging me to apply for a long term job there- which they’re advertising right now- before I’ve even started. I’m cautiously optimistic about the actual job, it’s just the practicalities of getting there.
Boo, it would be nice if our two countries weren’t in a seeming contest to see who could act like the biggest eejit.
I received an Economic Impact Payment Card. I was a little suspicious, so I had to check the linked page that showed images of the card and envelope. I was expecting a paper check. The letter says I can transfer the funds into a bank account. That’s what I need to do.
Mrs. L.A. tried to use the gift card I gave her for Christmas for one more thing at Amazon. It was declined due to lack of funds. She’s bought several things for herself, plus a potty pad for Tonka. She was able to use the card today for a new curette for her nursing business.
I had migraines for years along with sinus infections that never seemed to clear up. A month or so after I quit smoking they both stopped. Later, my Doctor told me the migraines were likely caused by the sinus infection that was likely due to smoking.
Would that it were that simple. All he could tell me was “They’re stubborn.” Meaning, they ain’t moving. He’s coming back home alone on Sunday. We can’t hog tie them and toss them into the trunk, tempting as the idea is. So they’ll die in FL and there’s nothing we can do about it. And we probably won’t hear anything till well after the fact - I don’t know if any of their neighbors have our numbers. And that’s that.
Sunny - FCD has medical and general powers of attorney, plus he’s their executor. But it’s not much help if we don’t find out anything in time.
bob - back in '14, my mother and I flew to London via Reykjavik for a cruise out of Southampton that circled the British Isles (plus Le Havre) back to Southampton, then to Shetland, Bergen, Iceland, Newfoundland, ending in New York. I’d do that cruise again in a heartbeat if Princess offers it again. Only with spousal unit this time.
I’d like to do the Med, but our next biggie will be LA to Buenos Aires via Antarctica next December. I’m going to do my best to budget for Business Class from Buenos Aires back to Washington. That a LOOOOOOONG flight!
I’m bored. I should walk, but I have no motivation. On the plus side, the house is relatively tidy. Maybe I’ll walk later while watching the evening news.
nellie, that sounds excruciating. I’ve had three migraines in my life, all related to my seizure disorder, and they were completely incapacitating. I hope he finds a solution.
So far the day is going. Just…going, which is okay. My husband is getting the girl from school (yay!). It has been lovely not having her doing handstands next to my desk today. I was actually able to do things related to work. AND, thanks to my trusty lamp, I was able to see! And I actually didn’t mind being at my desk because I didn’t feel like I was going blind.
Just downed an espresso and a blondie. I should be super cautious about what I’m eating/drinking so I can lose weight, but food is just so damn delicious it’s practically criminal. Which is why I plan to have french onion chicken casserole for dinner. It sounds awful, but it’s basically homemade french onion soup with rotisserie chicken on top of bread with melted gruyere on top.
well, remember my last post? their test came back positive and I’ve been sick as a dog since Sunday … so it’s quarantine time …
So even though I haven’t been tested I’m supposed to assume I have covid and just wait out the quarantine and told to drink tea orange juice vitamin-c and something with zinc in it and just ride it out … as the ER will tell me pretty much the same thing , oh and do call again if things get worse ,
